I’m curious if anyone is aware of anything that can be given to counteract effect if fipronil if given to a rabbit?
        A treatment protocol?

A few months ago there were some threads that came up about rabbits having sadly been treated with Frontline.
So I was thinking it would be good to know if anything could be done so we can advise people who are in this situation. Whether we come across it online or in real life.

ETA: I’m meaning info one could take to a vet to consider in event of Fipronil use.

Hmmm, I was just reading up on this to see if I could find anything, and it looks like there is a possible product to use to help with the seizures and such that come with the fipronil exposure. And it is used by vets to treat cats with seizures, although also used on other animals such as horses, cattle, pigs and rabbits as a sedative and for induction of anesthesia. So, ask your vet about Benzodiazepine, as it looks like that could be the only possible treatment, although it may not work for much other than the seizures and to relax them.

            Awesome. Thank you!

I suppose understanding what exactly is the cause if death would be useful. I’ll attempt to look into that also…

Just reading of a treatment for contact poisoning:

              -bathing in mild shampoo
              -subcutaneous or IV fluids
              -force feeding
              -activated charcoal if poison ingested
-diazepam or midazolam for seizure control

The worry with Frontline is how readily available it is. Over here, it’s the one you can easily buy at pharmacy/supermarket/department store.

@Jersey, you can buy Frontline at regular stores in Australia?!? It’s only available from veterinarians here… not sure if that is a Canada wide thing… but the only flea/tick stuff you can buy anywhere (that I’ve seen) is the Hartz stuff, that doesn’t actually work. Frontline is an over the counter thing, but it still has to be dispensed by your vet, to make sure you are using it properly.

In the uk you can buy frontline, drontal and panacur from pet shops with a licensed member of staff to dispense it and also over the counter from most pharmacies. Scary how easily you can get it if you don’t know what you’re doing. On the other hand it’s cheaper than getting it from your vet.

In the US we can just order it online too, not sure about just getting it in pet stores, as I have never really looked for it.

They have Frontline at a lot of stores in the US. They have it at pet supply stores and even big box hardware stores. I remember when you could only buy it at the vet’s office. Something changed though and it was made available at retail stores.
