Bilbo’s house is under the stairs in our living room, it’s a n indoor cage. He has his hay rack but my partber and I are forever sweeping/hoovering the floors because his hay and woodshaving beddingjust gets everywhere. I was wondering if there was a solution to this or if anyone else has a similar problem? I have thought about putting a mat or tray underneath but Bilbo would only eat it haha.

It’s a little hard to picture, so maybe you could take a pix of your cage set up?
My first idea was to take two sides of a cardboard box, fold it so one piece is underneath and the other sets up against the wall. Then, when you go to clean, you just move his cage away and either slide it out to toss the spilled stuff, or hoover it up directly. But not sure I’m picturing the placement correctly.

copy and paste the link into a new webpage and that’s his cage, i’ve just taken a photo.. it’s tidy at the moment because i hoovered but normally there’s hay/bedding outside it all over but it comes all the way into our living room, it’s a right pain.

I agree that maybe you can put some cardboard on the walls of the cage. They’ll probably chew it up, but it’s worth a try. I put a piece right beside the hay rack and it prevents it fairly well from spilling over. I just clip it with binder clips. But I agree – bunnies are SO messy! I’m really OCD about tidiness in my room (where he lives too) so I find myself needing to vacuum every other day.

Also, is that a store-bought hay rack? I like the idea of it!

I had plexiglass cut, drilled holes, and ziptied it to the bottom of the cage. It works real well and is easy to clean!! It was cheap too, any glass shop has it. I think I got 1/8 inch plexiglass and you can put it as high as you want, I think I did 8 inches!!

Judging from the photo, you can definitely take out the bedding on the cage, but leave the bedding that is in the litter box. There is no need for bedding on the floor of the cage, as it causes toilet issues and makes an even bigger mess of the house.

I agree with LoveChaCha. Looks like his whole cage can be considered a litter box with litter covering the bottom. Did you choose to do it that way due to litter box habits? What are his current litter habits? It looks like there are a lot of poos outside of the box near the hay rack. Bunnies definitely poo while they eat hay and it may be helpful to put the rack near the box or vice versa, so he can sit in the box and eat. If you are able to get him litter box trained, then you could take out the shavings completely.

As far as the hay, is it coming out from the rack? Or is the hay being tracked out by your bunny?

If part of it happens when you actually put hay in the hay box, then what helped me was to get a small laundry bag, fill it with hay, but leave about a foot from the top empty. Then I would take the bag over to the hay rack and pull the opening of the bag over the the hay rack (And that is why having that empty part on top was helpful. Then I would reach in and pull the hay out. In your case, you may have to really make the hay into a ball before you pull it out of the bag to minimize it flying out. Hay is tricky like that!

He is litterbox trained when it comes to wee’ing but he will poo where he likes but only inside his cage. The stuff in his littertray is proper wood litter not the bedding. I have the bedding in there for his comfort. He does his poos mostly near his ray rack yes as he poo’s and eats at the same time often. If I change where I have stuff in his cage it makes him wee elsewhere as I’ve tried before so have to keep it how he knows it. The hay is coming from his rack but he scrabbles it out with his feet so it ends up on the base of his cage.

You can definitely take the bedding out. I used sheets and towels in my x-pen as a floor. Having bedding kind of confuses them and makes them think its okay to use the bathroom anywhere. Keep the bedding confined to the litter box area to help them learn not to use the potty anywhere else!

Definitely take the bedding out. Unnecessary and is probably causing more mess than it is worth!

The plastic is fine on his little feeties but if you’re worried about comfort just throw acouple towels or a sheet in with him. He’ll throw them around and put them where he likes to lay on them. But usually my buns actually prefer the plastic to the towel/sheet.
