Hey guys. A few nights ago, Java flipped his water bowl and spilled it everywhere. We usually have it in a part where the pen bends (like a semi-corner), so it kinda holds it there, and he’s never attempted to flip it. But one night, I had it out of that corner, and he flipped it. Ever since, he flips it all the time, and tonight we just came home to find it flipped while we were gone – meaning he had no water.

On top of him possibly going thirsty, it’s soaking his pen blanket and our carpet. How can we prevent this now that he’s decided to flip it all the time? We won’t use a bottle, either, it’s just not an effective way for them to get water in my opinion.

I think some pet stores have attachable water bowls, or you may be able to find something online that attaches to the pen. Or a really, super duper heavy crock that can’t be flipped, or that has a lip that is too thick to get teeth on.

Bunnies are so funny because they will NEVER do something, and then they do it once by chance and decide, “HEY! That is FUN! I’m going to do this ALWAYS now!”

I don’t remember if that was you, might have been someone else, who had an issue with blanket digging. But in one of the recent threads I recommended a member get a cut remnant of linoleum to replace the blanket under their pen, or at least serve as an additional “water-and-chew-proof” layer. This is a good example of why a more permanent flooring is a good idea. You could still cover the lino with the blanket, but the carpet would be protected.

My bunnies have heavy ceramic crocks that they can’t flip. I’m sure if Bindi could flip it he would think it’s fun and do it all the time.

Had this problem with Sally so I just purchased a kennel crock that attaches to her pen. No flipping yay! She always flipped it out of spite. Like if we put her away too soon and she isn’t ready she tries flipping every bowl!

Probably going to have to get an attachable crock. I just hate having to get a new bowl because I got a nice ceramic lettuce shaped bowl that matches his other two bowls.

I wish there was something I could do so that I could use this one still. Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!

Sally has a bowl that looks like a carrot. I was going to use it for her veggie bowl but SOMEBODY has decided to not like veggies so I just put extra hay in it lol when Harley heals it will become his salad bowl

An attachable crock is usually the answer.

However was the bowl anywhere it usually wasn’t? It’s possible your bunny tipped the bowl because he didn’t like where it was. Maybe move it to another spot and see if he still dumps it?

I use heavy crocks, meant for dogs. They work well. You can get them from petco, petsmart or walmart. Valentine would be flipping the bowl if it wasn’t heavy. She likes to move and flip bowls.

If you’re talking about the same lettuce bowl that I have which is a pretty common bowl for bunnies and other small animals then I don’t think that is a good bowl for water. Way too light. I use that bowl for bunny salad for Marley now.

Good luck with your bowl hunt! =)

I think an attachable bowl or a heavy crock would work well.

The bowl is in the exact same spot that it’s been in since day 1. It’s just that I had set it in a different spot for a second while I picked up some pieces of hay from the area, and he flipped it. Ever since, he flips it non stop and it’s actually a problem now because he’s not able to drink water when we’re gone.

@ Amys, it’s most likely the bowl you’re thinking. The brand makes a carrot and radish bowl as well. It was perfect for water before he started flipping it – even the carrot bowl barely holds his entire salad.

Those bowls are far too light for water. Look into getting a heavy dog crock. He won’t be able to get his teeth on the rim to flip it. An attachable one shouldn’t be necessary.

Attachable probably is necessary, unless it’s really that heavy. Most of the time, he’s not using his teeth, he’s shoving with his face. And he’s pretty strong.

Yeah, I have the same lettuce bowl. =) Cute bowl, but definitely not good for water, as you can see he’s discovered he can flip it. =P They sell attachable crocks at petco/petsmart, if you choose that but I think a heavy crock would work just fine.

ugh, sounds like it initially got flipped because it was in the way; and then turned into a fun game

I’d try a heavy ceramic crock or a shaped bowl like a dog bowl-where it’s tapered so they can’t get a hold of it. like this without the yummy rubber http://www.sail.ca/en/catalogue/hunting/dog-training-accessories/1689/dog-bowl/
