I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on why my 4 month old male mini lop has all of a sudden stopped being his usual energetic self.

He’s been sitting in his litter box for 4 hours now, he hasn’t had much, if any, water pretty much all day.

He ate some of his veges (bok choy, celery and fennel) in the morning but left half which was unusual but he ate these later.

He’s had a little bit of hay but no where near the normal amount.

He is pooping, but they are lighter in colour and a tad smaller

He has peed but it’s just a small amount.

I’m getting very worried… not sure what it might be. Puberty? Gas? I haven’t fed him anything out of the ordinary except for one leaf off a brussel sprout.

        Help!

Have you just started him on veggies?  Might want to cut back on them and get him to eat more hay.  I would also try more greens like lettuces and cilantro.  Also parsley.

Celery and fennel and bok chow probably wouldn’t be my first choice – think leafy vegetables.

I would suggest you read this article on suggested veggies from House Rabbit Society – read the article in it’s entirety, not just the list:

In addition to what Sarita said, I just want to add that if he stops eating and/or pooping, he needs vet attention. Not right now, but just in case!

Has his weight changed or can you feel his ribs easily? If so, I’d take him to the vet immediately. If not, keep monitoring his weight. Waiting for eating to stop may be too late. You could also force a little water by syringe or wet vegetables.

I originally started him on cilantro (or coriander, here in Aus) and parsley. The reason I worried was that he has been on those particular veges since I started to ween him onto veges about a month ago and he’s been fine until now.

Thanks for the advice about cutting back on the veges in the meantime, I’ve done that today. He seemed better this morning, he was munching on his hay and had a little sip of water but better than nothing right?

He isn’t super skinny but if you run your hand over his back you can feel his spine, but you can’t feel his ribs. I don’t know if this is normal or not.

I will definately keep an eye on the poops, they haven’t stopped and they look sort of normal again. He has an appointment to be neutered next week so I’ll mention it to the vet as well.

                Thanks for your help guys!

It is normal to feel their spine and ribs, but the bones shouldn’t be sticking and the bun should not be visibly emaciated.

He might be having a little bit of gas right now. I agree with what the others said, keep an eye on him, give him a diet that he’s accustomed to, and be ready to react if he stops eating, drinking, or pooping altogether.

Today is Thursday. If you think he’s going to need to be seen, try to get him in today or tomorrow BEFORE the weekend. It’s better to be cautious than to be stuck with no vet until Monday.

Just a little note to give an update.
Bear was back to normal the next day, making sure he was eating plenty of hay and water.
He’s gone in to be neutered today so it’s a big day for him!
Thank you for all for all your help!

                      How did his neuter go?

                        The neuter went really well!
The vet said he ate as soon as he woke up, but when I took him home he was super groggy and just sat in the one spot for a few hours not really eating much. I was able to tempt him with a little bit of banana though. Eventually he started to eat and drink again, so there was nothing out of the ordinary.
He is suuupper psycho now though! I was worried he was going to open up the wound but he hasn’t done that yet. He’s jumping all over the place and constantly wants to run around. Hoping that he will calm down in the coming week or so.
