My daughter brought home a rescue baby bun this summer around the same time that our humane society was having a big adoption push and my husband came home with a baby kitten. These two really didn’t interact very long during the training stages just because we didn’t have a good set up to mix the babies and our canines. For a long time, when they were out for big space play, it was when things could be controlled and carefully supervised and until recently, I didn’t let them get too close. Now that they are older, they have floor time together as we watch TV, etc. Our cat box is in an old stereo cabinet that has a hole cut in the side and we change it through the top. The bun would go in and explore, but didn’t leave anything behind until today. We had already changed to yesterdays news throughout just because of the bun’s enjoyment of the stereo cabinet.

My question is: is it harmful to let him have that close of access to a litter box a cat is also using? If you look at the pictures I included, these two hang out together and I now have to feed our two cats (the growing kitten and our adult cat) in supervision because the bun wants to eat their food. He even intimidated our grown cat from approaching her bowl b/c Phil the bunny was trying to eat the food. I quickly made a switch of bowls and gave Phil his bunny food bowl. That’s the second picture you can see is the one of the three eating all together at our cat feeding station up off the floor away from the dogs. I won’t feed Phil there again, but it seemed to keep the three content and the adult cat could eat that day and now I supervise the cats and put their food away, but Phil is freely fed all day in his cage. Phil seems to do fine with sharing his “space” with the kitten (the other picture I attached) and the kitten doesn’t do any messes in there or that would be a big problem with the hay. It is just Phil using the cat box because I don’t mind and neither do the cats…so…just checking on safety/health probable issues. FYI: all are up on shots and worming, etc. The cats are spayed and Phil is not neutered (yet).

        Any feedback would be appreciated!

How old is Phil ? Just wondering if he is starting to get his hormones and has decided to claim the cat box as his. As you can see in my signature pic (second one along)… Boy bunnies like little boxes with holes in the side too.

I don’t know why bunnies like cat food but many of them do…… The biggest disadvantage I can see with Phil using the cat box is until he is neutered his pee could get a tad aromatic… also they have a nasty habit of likeing to sleep where they toilet so if the kitten has a messy day it could result in a fairly revolting rabbit.

Sharing of litter boxes is not recommended. Can’t remember what cats can carry, but it can be transmitted to bunnies through the cat’s poop.

                Hi and welcome to BB

Cat feces is laden with bacteria so I would not let your bunny have access to the litter box.

It’s sweet how your bun and kitty are such good friends. I have 2 cats and 2 bunnies but they totally ignore each other.
