I’ve had bunny about a month now and I was told by his previous owner that he had never been taken to a vet other than to have his nails clipped ( needless to say I was most annoyed) so I immediately arranged an appointment for his vaccinations. He went a week ago for the myxymatosis one and I took some of his food and droppings along to be checked. He was given his injection and a clean bill of health all round. His teeth were checked and the vet said they are fine. He is due for the virus injection in 2 weeks but I’m not sure I should leave it so long depending on what is wrong with his eye. Yesterday I noticed that his left eye has started to water slightly. His cage stays open permanently and he roams free in my apartment. So far he’s been extremely well behaved. He munches happily on his greens, his hay and his pellets but he’s not interested in carrots. He hops around as normal and I clean his litter tray out twice a day. I don’t know what could be wrong with my bunny bun. Please help

Many times eye problems are caused by dental problems especially in lops and you think your rabbit is around 2 years old correct?

It also might be a clogged tear duct – just many possibilities that it’s hard to know.

I’m not at all familiar with the virus injection however as it is not required in the US hopefully someone can chime in on this that is familiar.

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes I think he’s 2. The vet said his teeth are fine which i find strange. I will just keep an eye on it and take him to the vet sooner if it gets any worse. I will look into what can be done for a blocked tear duct. I saw some ointment in the pet store today, perhaps I will go buy it tomorrow.

I would not put any ointment you find in the pet store in his eyes – just have to be so careful about what products you use. Perhaps your vet can suggest an ointment.

Many times too a blocked tear duct is caused by the tooth roots growing up into that area and it’s not something you can detect with an oral exam, that would require an x-ray.

I suppose I shouldn’t be so trusting, just because the packaging says it’s for rabbits doesn’t mean I can always trust it. I have found so much conflicting information online I sometimes just don’t know. I will call the vet tomorrow and ask her because she saw him just over a week ago.

Bunny’s eye is back to normal. Must have just been a little irritation which has healed. I’m so happy because I cant stand seeing him with something not quite right.
