One of my buns has been getting too comfortable and I’ve found him flopped way too often sleeping. Even when I make a little noise, there’s no movement and he remains still in that position sleeping. It’s not a problem per se but I have a panic attack thinking he’s dead and then disturb him from his sleep to make sure he’s ok. Previously, when either one flops, they are awake so there wasn’t a problem and/or immediately perk up when I’m around.

So, stupid question, how can you tell the difference between a flopped sleeping bun and a dead bun without attempting to awake? He’s all black so even awake, it’s very hard to see nose twitching.

Haha, the same has definitely happened to me too. Really, unless you’re dealing with health problems, don’t worry! A bunny that has passed away will look a lot more unnaturally stretched out due to physiological post-mortem processes.

I’m the same way with Sally! I had two buns suddenly pass away so I’m always paranoid! She will be flopped out in the kitchen sleeping and when I walk in there and start making something to eat she won’t budge and naturally I have to go over to check on her lol and even though she’s alive I sit and pet her a few minutes to make sure she feels ok too lol
but trust me, you’ll just know when you do see it I’ve seen the, flopped out a few hours before death, and the sickly flop and the relaxed sleeping flop look a lot different. But I’m still paranoid about it just because my first two buns passed away so suddenly (they were from a pet sore who most likely used backyard breeders for quick stock) and Sally is from the same store so I’m more paranoid with her than Harley who is from a reputable “show breeder”

My bun shamus does this also. Usually I just look Kay his stomach and can see it moving up and down with each inhale and exhale

He does have health issues which is why I get worried (maybe he got too congested and couldn’t breathe…). I can get a foot away without him moving/waking. I’ll try to pay more attention to his belly (but he’s all black so I can barely see it moving at normal times) and keep in mind if he looks “normal” he’s ok.
