This may be a dumb question but I was thinking of ordering like 50 pounds of hay but the only problem I would have is I wouldn’t be able to keep that much hay in the house and we don’t have a shed.  I was wondering if I could keep the hay in the garage if it is in a bag and sealed?  After thinking about it I don’t think it would be but what do you guys think?  Bad idea or would it be okay?  If it’s a bad idea I’ll just go ahead and order 25 pounds instead.  Thanks!

          Hi Amys Animals.
I keep my hay in the garage too and there doesn’t seem to be any problems. The only thing is that you are never supposed to keep hay sealed. In order for hay to stay fresh it needs to breathe. If you are going to keep it in a plastic bin then you can drill several wholes in the bin to let in air. You can also use a large cardboard box as long as there is ventilation.
          Hope this helps

Yeah, I know you aren’t supposed to keep is sealed. =P I just wouldn’t feel safe keeping it in the garage if it wasn’t sealed. I am just going to get a 25 pound bag and keep it in the house. I don’t want to risk anything. Thanks for your input, though!! =)

I’m not sure how quickly you go through your hay, but if it’s going to be sitting out for more than a month or two I would go with 25 lbs. Also, if you can’t seal it up completely, putting it in a cardboard box is still better than nothing. Then again, this all depends on the climate where you live – I would recommend against keeping hay in your garage if you live in a very humid area.

I store a 50lb box of hay in my garage and haven’t had a problem. I have two rabbits and they go through a box every 4-6 months I think and I’ve never had a problem with it molding or otherwise going bad. I’ve probably gone through 5-6 boxes at this point in two different houses (stored in the garage in both) without issues.

Hay actually lasts (holds its nutritionak value) a very long time (im talking years). In fact most of the hay available for purchase is over a year old. as long as it can breathe, it should last. just check how old it is when purchased…if its a year already it can be used for another year or possibly longer. if its fairly new, itll last even longer. if it is newer, make sure it breathes well as itll be wetter and more prone to mold if stored inproperly. and like others said’ just drill small holes in a plastic bin for storage, do not keep it sealed in plastic.
