So, as you know, I was having some hay trouble with Hecklin because she wasn’t eating hay very much. I switched to oat, and a higher quality timothy and after a day or two she started eating it again–which, thank heavens! Only, I’ve noticed something peculiar..

Bentlee (my chinchilla rabbit) eats almost all of his hay by the time the day is up so I have to refill it. But I’ve noticed Hecklin and Gus still have a remarkable amount left. Should I be worried about this?

Also, what hays are safe to give to rabbits? I know Alfalfa isn’t recommended for rabbits over six months, but what other kinds should I avoid? Or is that the only ones?

Eating some hay is better than none. Some bunnies are just little cows and others are not. I have a similar problem with veggies. Mine will eat some, but they don’t eat nearly as much as some other people’s buns on the forum. I would just keep encouraging your buns to eat their hay. If you find a kind they seem to enjoy more, then make sure to have that available at all times. As far as I know, there isn’t any hay that isn’t recommended other than alfalfa. Don’t quote me on that though. Alfalfa is okay as a treat or a topper for adult buns. You just don’t want to give them a ton.

Have you tried Orchard Hay? Oxbow and the BB store have some good hay varieties if you want to try others. You could also try a local feed store if you have any.

I also know that BB has some tasty looking hay toppers that might encourage her to eat more.

Or maybe mix in a little Oxbow Botanical Hay as incentive.

But I agree with LBJ. Eating some is better than none!

Thank you guys for your suggestions! I know some hay is better than none but I’m still a little worried–I guess you could call me a little overprotective

I bought them some Orchard hay today so I’m going to see how she likes that! And if that doesn’t work then I’ll try to the hay topper and see if it helps!

How much other food are they eating? Mine increased hay consumption when I cut back on their pellets, so your might be filling up on other food and just aren’t super hungry for hay.

They don’t get very many pellets, maybe a handful or so a day. I don’t give them very many because I’m transitioning them to a new brand, so I don’t want to cause them belly issues.

I’ve cut back their veggie consumption–they now only get a veggie salad in the morning, and that’s about it–and I’ve noticed between cutting back their veggies and giving them new hay, Hecklin, in the last couple of days, has been eating more hay. I know it’s only been a couple of days, but this is a good sign
