Noticed a slight problem with my bonded male and female rabbit. They were both neutered/spayed as soon as they could be. It has been 5 months and greater for the both of them since the surgery. I have recently noticed when the male gets in the way of the female, the female will mount him until he moves out of the way. This happened yesterday. Thought maybe it was just a weird get out of my way type thing.

Today she was chasing him around outside of the cage trying to mount. This is VERY odd behavior as they are fully bonded, love to cuddle, fixed, and she is actually very passive in the relationship for the most part. I thought with no hormones = no mounting. What is going on?

Fixed bunnies of either sex will mount. It is a dominance thing. Has anything changed recently? Sometimes that can trigger a humping fest.

Many times it can be because of excitement as well – is this when you are feeding them?

I had a female bonded pair and one of the females would mount the other when she got excited (about food). I also used to rabbit sit a bonded altered male/female pair and the female was extremely dominant and would mount the male – she had been spayed for awhile to. So it’s very normal behavior.

Ok good to know it’s semi-normal.

There hasn’t been a big change in their environment at all. The first time I noticed it was in fact when I was feeding them and the male was in the way of the food dish. However, the second/third time they were out of the cage and she was chasing him / mounting him. That was yesterday. Now they are getting along fine again.

Bunnies, even bunnies very much in love, often routinely mount to show dominance. “I’m still in charge here, got it? hump hump hump”. Like Sarita, mentioned, excitement can make bunnies hump too.

                  Haha I like your example.

I just hope it doesn’t hurt their relationship. The female tried to mount again and the male kicked and hopped angrilly away like he was offended AND confused.

If there is no aggression, I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s a normal part of most bonded pairs.
