My Netherland Dwarf appears to have some slight drainage going from his eyes. It’s not a crazy amount, it’s only noticeable up close and it’s a clear color. There is no redness or irritation and he does not appear to have been tearing at all, so I’m at a loss as to what it could be. I suspect that it may be caused by allergies to something in the house. Other than the drainage he seems okay. He plays fine, eats fine, does his business fine, and drinks fine. I feed him mostly Timothy Hay and about 3/4 to one cup of pellets each day (he shares a pellet bowl with a slightly older rabbit and between the two of them throughout the entire day I can only guesstimate how much he actually is eating.) He’s still young, around 2 months, so I’m holding off on introducing him to fruits and veggies until he’s a little older. Any opinions on what this could be caused by or what I can do to clean some of it out? :/ I know I ultimately need to take him to a vet but in the meantime I want to try and make him feel a little more comfortable in any way that I can. Especially if it’s allergies.

If there is excess clear fluid coming from his eye, it’s possible that drainage duct is blocked…a vet will be able to perform the necessary tests to tell what is happening. If he has gunk building up around his eye you can gently remove it for him, but otherwise as long the eye isn’t red, there isn’t pus, and he’s not trying to scratch it excessively it might not be bothering him too much, and he should be fine until you can take him to the vet.

Okay that’s good to hear! I was so worried he’d be uncomfortable or in pain! I’ll try and get him to a vet sometime this week. Do you think he’ll be okay until then?

Dutchess recently had some clear drainage when she had a viral/bacterial infection, and she was sneezing a lot and had a bit of a runny nose. The vet told me that clear drainage is better than yucky drainage, if its gunky or goopy or discolored then there is something going on. They did go through some allergy questions with me, so it may be that your bun does have an allergy. Since he’s only two months old, it could be something in your home that is causing it since he just moved in. I would -not- recommend using any sort of q-tip or tool to remove the drainage, I used my finger to swipe down Dutchess’s cheek to remove it rather than swiping it back towards her eye, be mindful of your nail so you don’t scratch. If it is something you don’t want to make it worse by spreading it. It doesn’t sound like he is in a lot of pain since he is eating and acting normally. Bunnies do have a normal drainage for their eyes, so once you make sure he is okay watch so you know how much is average for him, so in the future you know if it changes. Some light colored rabbits have yellow on the corner of their eyes from their natural drainage, and that is nothing to be alarmed about. Bunnies also get sleep crust which is fine to remove, I remove Dutchess’ every day and she seems to enjoy it.

Keep us updated after your vet check

Thank you so much for all of this information! You helped me feel much better about the situation. I was pretty worried about him! I’ll definitely post an update once I get him checked up!
