Hey guys, I just took my Rocco to the vet yesterday for a check up & she told me that I needed to feed her Timothy hay instead of alfalfa due to high calcium in the alfalfa. She is only 6 weeks old & I had read on multiple sites that the alfalfa is good for her at this young especially since she was weaned so early. & she hates the Timothy hay, she will find little alfalfa pieces & munch on those. What do you guys think?

Is there a reason your vet thinks Rocco needs extra calcium ? My buns have always had an oaten barley blend and in the last few months have also had meadow hay. We are a bit limited to options down here in Oz. They love the oaten barley blend and have perfect little teeth. They get plenty of calcium from their greens and pellets.
You could try getting both and keeping a blend in a sealed tub. That way she gets what she likes and what the vet thinks she needs.

Roberta, she said it had too much calcium. Well, most likely she is getting plenty of calcium from her pellets which are usually made of alfalfa at this young age there is no need to have alfalfa hay and alfalfa pellets.

But calcium is not really the problem, it’s oxalates.

I don’t think there’s really a problem with taking her off the alfalfa. My vet had my buns off from it at about 3-4 months old. Which was their first vet visit.

Thanks Sarita, I misunderstood… It was late when I posted (Sleep Deprivation must have kicked in)

It makes much more sense now
