Elvira is almost a year old and a lionhead. She is black with a grey mane and grey fur around her legs. Anyway, recently her grey is getting darker and darker. He mane is almost black and her leg hair is getting shorter… Is this normal? Will the grey come back? Below is a picture of how she normally looks, so that you can see the grey I am talking about!

Changing colors is normal. Sometimes baby buns have a “baby coat” and it will change as they mature. Wooly’s fur changed. His black fur was very soft and dark when he was a baby. As he matured, he got fuzzier (he’s a wooly breed) and his black fur turned more gray in appearance.

Yup, sometimes slight changes in color can happen. It can be the result of a baby bun just getting a little older and growing it’s coat out, or sometimes their color may vary ever so slightly from one shed to the next.

When I first saw Freya in the rescue centre she was 7 weeks old and she was brown with really distinctive black on her nose and black ears (almost like a Siamese cat type markings) now she’s five months old and the black colour has almost kind of melted into the brown so the markings are less defined and more of a smoky colour.
Also with Merlin when we first got him the black around his eyes was just like a little ring of eyeliner but now he’s six months old and I’ve noticed the black ring has gotten thicker and he has teardrop shapes in the front corner of his eyes and little flicks in the top corner (almost looks like he has horns lol)
So I guess they can change over time, also maybe when they moult they might change like some animals in the wild – lighter in the summer and darker in the winter.

when we fostered lacey and zoey in oct/nov,, it was super easy to tell zoey apart a mile away because her ears were white while lacey’s were black..
now that its cold out (consistently below 70) her ears are now dark too.

Interesting! Thanks for all of the responses! I guess we will see if her grey comes back in a couple of months or if she just grew out of it
