Well, Velvet has had more cecals left on the floor than she consumes for a while now. My brother-in-law has horses and was bringing us like quarter bales of home grown hay. I stopped feeding her that, (used to put it in litterbox to cover wood stove pellets. Now I just use Timothy hay for litterbox over the pellets, and for munching on in her hay box. The excess cecals are no longer around so, I think the homegrown hay was too rich or something, she’s just turning 3yo in Feb. I don’t mind hard turds but thos Cecals stink, not to mention stick to carpet or rugs pretty good too!

Just a heads up, regular hay maybe a problem for diet at least in older bunnies.

I’ve never heard of hay causing extra cecals but it makes sense. I know it can cause loose stools in horses so it’s not surprising.

Well, I don’t know, but, they say alfalfa hay is mostly grass, and Timothy hay is less grass, I don’t know, but Velvet has less “extra cecals”, unless just being spayed would make a difference?

Alfalfa is actually not a grass, it’s a legume. This is not recommended for adult rabbits as the primary source of hay.

I’m not really sure what you mean by regular hay either.

Grass hays are the most important part of a rabbit’s diet and grass hays include timothy, brome, orchard, fescue, bermuda – there are more but these are grass hays.

Regular hay, as in home grown and hand bailed right here in Minnesota, not Timothy hay, so, I think you call it alfalfa?

I think different parts of the country grow different types of hay. I live in Texas and we do not grow timothy hay. I’m not sure what is grown in Minnesota – I guess the best thing to do would be to ask the farmer exactly what is in the hay – much of the time they are blends of different hays. So home grown in one area is different from home grown in a different area.

All I know is it seems like the homegrown hay was the cause for the uneaten cecals, I have’nt seen anymore since I stopped it, and started buying Timothy Hay at the stores.
