I think my Charley is around 10 weeks old now. Her nails are razor sharp and I was wondering when should I give her nails their first trim? Anytime now, or should I wait ’til she’s older/certain age? And how often should they be trimmed in the beginning? I know that you have to trim them frequently to get the nail kwick to recede. I’m really nervous about trimming them, so I will try the burrito/towel wrap method w/ a helper. If we can’t manage I will try to take her to get them done at the vets.

I’ve read different things about when to introduce fresh veggies and fruits. I’ve read anywhere from 3-4 months to waiting til around 6 months old. If Charley is just about to turn 10 weeks old, when should I introduce her first veggies. Also what veggies/fruits would you recommend starting off on. I am aware that fruit should be limited. I also do have the safe fruit/veggie list from the HRS.

I don’t give her any treats from the store. She is on a diet of alfalfa pellets, timothy hay and alfalfa, all are free fed/given unlimited. I toss out and refill her pellet dish about every 3 days and it only holds about 1/4 a cup. She’s not near as interested in them as she is her timothy hay. She has a hay rack w/ a mix of timothy & alfalfa as well as getting fresh hay in her litter box daily & at play time. I’m in no rush to get her fresh veggies or fruit if its too soon, but it would be nice to be able to give her a special treat here or there.

Number one, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, did I mention NEVER let her run out of hay.

I started to give my bun his veggies around 10 weeks. I did give him a few carrots when he was 9 weeks, just to see if he was interested in veggies. I do however space out carrots, since they are high in sugars. I gave him a carrot or two every 2 or 3 days. As for clipping your buns nails..I haven’t had to clip my buns nails and he’s 12 weeks..they aren’t really long at all, but when he goes to the vet this week i’m gonna have them trimmed. Forgot to add, every 4 pounds the bun should get a cup of veggies..try to save the ones that are high in sugar for occasional snacks. I have gave my bun unlimited hay since he came to me..don’t ever go a day without hay.

I have my rabbit savvy vet cut my bun’s nails. Mainly just because she is just so feisty there is no way of me being able to do it. If you’re nervous about cutting your bun’s nails I’m sure that your rabbit savvy vet would be willing to cut them. I’ll have had my bun for a year in March. And in that time I’ve only had to have had her nails trimmed once. I found that giving my little one a cardboard box to rip up/dig at keep her nails fairly short.

I started my bun right off with veggies when I got her. Which was somewhere from 6-8 weeks. Since she was so young I made sure to start her off with a small, small, small amount of veggies. I would suggest to start your bun of slowly. Give her a small amount of veggies and only one veggie at a time. That way you can monitor her poo and make sure it’s not messing with her digestive system. I would suggest giving her one veggie for a week/week and half before trying to introduce a new one. Again just being cautious and making sure that the veggies react well to your bun’s digestive system.

I know that the HRS says to give young rabbits alfalfa. But for my particular bun it did not agree with her digestive system. We ended up yanking it form her diet because of that. So if you’re finding your bun really only likes timothy then I don’t see the harm in slowly weaning her off the alfalfa. But you’re honestly fine as long as you give her unlimited access to hay.

Thanks. She is getting plenty of timothy hay. I am going to start buying a timothy, clover and orchard mix in bales from a local farmer so she shouldnt run out anyime soon. She seems to do ok with alfalfa (her pellets are alfalfa mixed) and she does occasionally forage it out of her hay rack or litter and eat it without problems, I did give her solely timothy at first and she seems to have a preference for it. I see a lot of ppl give their buns veggies early but i was worried of her getting scours. Shes never had any issues with her tummy thankfully. I suppose i could offer her something small and see how she does with it.
As far as her nails they are pretty long but very thin pointy and sharrrrrp. Its been freezing the last cpl of days so ive had on thermals and sweats and when she jumps into my lap and walks around its like shots even through the thick pants lol. She does well being handled but i dont anticipate shell be happy if i whip out some nail clippers and grab her toes lol. So i plan on having a helper and the burrito method. If not, i will try the vet. She has tons of cardboards but she only briefly digs. I hope i dont have to trim them often. I thought it was necessary for the kwiks to recede.

Hang on a second, what are scours? I’ve never heard about that before? And Apollo just went in for his neuter at the vets, they’re going to clip his nails there because I had the exact same issue as you, it was like getting needles every 2-3 seconds! It hurts! Haha! P

I think Romaine or green leaf lettuce is a good veggie to start with. That’s was the starter veg for all my buns.
