Finn has been eating cat food. We don’t feed our cats junk, it’s all high protein and grain free. Is this something to be worried about?

Its definitely not good for him. Is there anyway you can keep him from getting to it ? To much protein is not a good thing.

Cat food, is cat food. Rabbits should not be eating it! Can you put it up high where the cats can jump to get it, but Finn can’t? He really should be eating just his pellets and veggies and hay!

I agree. Among other things, rabbits are complete vegetarians, and cats need the proteins etc. from meat, fish and poultry, so those ingredients are often in the mix even in dry food, which is not OK for bunnies.

The suggestion to put the cat food in an inaccessible place where the bunny can’t get to it, either behind a screened off area of up higher, is an excellent idea.

Why would he eat it though? Obviously they’re vegetarians so he shouldn’t have any interest in protein…

Plant proteins in the right percentage are good… Animal proteins that contain different enzymes and cholesterols are not good, plus buns are herbivores, kittehs are carnivores…. Very different dietary and nutritional requirements.

I don’t know why he would eat it, but it’s not uncommon for this to happen. But it is not good for them since rabbits don’t eat meat.

Bindi always tries to eat the dry cat food. He got to it a couple of times, now I always put it up before he goes in the kitchen but he always makes a bee-line for where the dish usually is. It’s weird that a rabbit would want to eat that!

I caught my rabbit FooFoo eating cat food once, I think she liked the crunch, she wasn’t really after the protein or beef flavor. I think they like it for the same reasons they enjoy eating cardboard, they like the smell, taste, and texture. Nutritional value doesn’t mean anything to them.

I know this comment is super old but my last bunny was named Foo Foo. We thought he was female at first, when we found out he was a boy we named him Foobert Humperdinck. We still called him Foo Foo. I miss him SO much. He was diagnosed with head tilt and we had to put him down the day before Thanksgiving. We’re still heartbroken.

This thread is old but my new bunny, Snacks, I just caught him eating dry cat food. I put the food up on a storage bench so he can’t get to it. I hope he didn’t get too muc cuz he’s only 3 months old.

Hi, Maria. Welcome to BB. My recently passed 11 year old bunny used to be obsessed with the cat’s dry food. He would make a beeline for the cat dish as soon as it was out-time and, if I forgot to put it up, would gobble up as much as he could. Thankfully, it never caused him any problems. Just try to makes sure to keep it out of reach.

In future, we ask that members please not respond to old threads as it can cause confusion. Thanks.

Mr. Rabbit loves dog and cat kibble! I try to put a small bit of lettuce and herb greens in his box for him so I can feed the dog and cat but if I forget he will push the dog out of the way. My kitty is able to hold her own mostly as she’s bit bigger, older and wiser. But it’s still something I have to be mindful of. Mr. Rabbit is kind of a garbage man… he will literally eat anything! I have my pantry and garbage closet locked up because I’ve found him tearing through cereal, crackers, lemonade mix, rice… etc. Even found him in the trash can (wondering where he was hiding). Certainly keeps me on my toes
