So I did the unforgivable today, I made Ariadne scream on accident. I was cleaning the cage with my shop vac and she is absolutely terrified of it. Well at one point she was going to hide under the dresser, but since I thought my cat was hiding under there I quickly went to grab her and she screamed. I felt SO bad and I hoped I’d never have to hear that sound. I let her hide under there since the cat had run out and she was terrified. At first I thought she was terrified of me but I think she thought it was the vacuum that tried to get her. In order to make it up to her I picked her up and gave her some loving as well as some kale.

Has anyone else made their bunny scream? Ugh I just felt so terrible, but I think she’s alright now. Next time I’m going to just stick her in the bathtub when I clean the cage.

Yes, it’s heartbreaking. I think it hurts us more than them because we know they are safe with us, they don’t, they just know they are scared.

Awww I can just imagine! It sounds like she was really scared and thought the vacuum finally got her! she’ll get over it

Rupert like sort of yelled once. I know it wasn’t anything I was doing, he was in the tub for a bum bath, but the water wasn’t on, there was no water in the tub or anything and I wasn’t holding him. He actually doesn’t/didn’t get bum baths in the tub, I just popped him in there to try that once and was getting a cup to use. He looked right at me and did a low quick yell. I am certain it was on purpose, directed at me and was a four letter word But it certainly wasn’t out of fear or pain (when he’s frightened he RUNS …into walls) it was, anger or I can only imagine his try to distract me from what he knew was coming-a quick bum bath!

Aww, poor thing! The only time I heard a rabbit scream was a wild one. It had fallen into the basement window well when I was a kid. He couldn’t get out because he was just a little baby. My dad went to help him out and he was screaming at the top of his lungs! o_O

I understand bunnies not liking the vacuum though. Wooly still bounces off the walls when he sees the vacuum coming. And he thumps at it. LOL Leopold, on the other hand, gets sucked by the vacuum and he doesn’t know the difference. I suppose it helps that he can’t hear it.

I have heard Mocha scream before. It was before I knew much about rabbits and he was still an outdoor bunny at that time and was not used to me. I picked him up to take him back into his cage and he wiggled, screamed and jumped out of my arms! I hated myself for it. I also have hear one of my foster rabbits squeal when I picked him up. I hate it so much and always start shaking and almost cry every time!

It’s so weird how bad I felt, but that’s the one sound you never want to hear from a rabbit. It’s weird hearing any sound come out of them let alone screaming bloody murder.

She’s fine this evening. Thankfully she did think it was the vacuum because she doesn’t seem frightened of me.

Theodore used to not mind the vacuum. He’s deaf too and kept hopping around while I was trying to clean and got himself stuck on the end of it! It’s a 5hp and he’s only 2.5 lbs, so with the linoleum floor he couldn’t get away from it. I had to quickly pull him off but now he steers clear of it

Awww….poor bunny. I’m hoping also that is a noise I will never hear. My bunnies hate the vacuum too. My rabbit room is always a huge hay mess because I’m so leery to vacuum and upset them.

It’s a very upsetting sound. You’ve already decided to do what I was going to suggest, which is to move her into a different room during cleaning to avoid hearing the scary vacuum and any need for you to catch her again.

Don’t worry – she’s fine now. But when a bunny is misbehaving, we often recommend that their human scream high (not loud) if they are accidentally bitten, because a bunny recognizes that sound as one of pain or protest. It’s just so much harder when you’ve heard it from your own bunny. You’ll be fine soon.

When I found two abandonned rabbits in the woods, the little one screamed when I grabbed her. It’s an awful sound that I’ve heard once before when I saw a seagull take a baby rabbit (wild) in my garden, many many years ago. And that was a “good” thing that I knew rabbits can scream in this terrible way, because if I hadn’t, I might have dropped the little one and she would not have been rescued.

So having heard a rabbit scream, could actually help another rabbit another time.

(The little girl-rabbit now lives with another rabbit in a permanent home. The other rabbit, a male, I kept myself.)
