I recently got a bunny and she’s two months old. timothy hay is not common where i am from. but we have rich patches of carabao grass in our backyard. i am wondering if its alright for nuggets (my bunny) to feed on it? and if it is alright, can i give her unlimited supply of carabao grass (with hay, of course) or is it considered a treat and must be given in small amounts only?

Thank you in advance for helping me with this dilemma.

          Hi and Welcome radmc,

Interesting question. The thing is the carabao is green and probably lush and very tatsy for a bun, hay is dried and crunchy and that is what makes it grind down the teeth and act as roughage in addition to providing the nutrients. They really aren’t the same thing.
As long as it is clean and not exposed to herb or pesticides it would be a lovely treat or salad supplement but you really need hay. If you can’t get timothy have you checked to see if there is a livestock provider that has oaten hay or a pet supply that has other varieties. It really is essential to a healthy bunny.

If hay is limited then grass is certainly important in the diet. I believe carabao is safe for them… I think it’s also known as Buffalo grass? If that is right, then wild rabbits eat this so I would think it safe for a pet rabbit.

              Hi Jerseygirl,
Yep, looks identical to our buffalo lawn.

thanks. i felt so excited when i came across this site. reading the comments, i can see that people here really care for their bunnies.

cattle growers near our place feed their cattles hay made out of cogon grass. but im not comfortable giving it to nuggets. i think it will be too hard for her, plus this grass is sharp. i am not sure if im correct though.

You are right, hay that’s good for cows is not good for bunnies. Horses however !! We had a similar topic the other day. If you have people with horses nearby you could see where they buy there hay and ask what type it is. Oat, wheat, barley etc are the best in the bulk hay from stock feeders.
They do need a good sharp crunchy hay though to get their teeth working and they really enjoy the crunch..

i checked the buffalo grass. yup, looks exactly the same. thanks.

articles about bunny diet keep on repeating timothy, alfaalfa and sometimes bermuda. do you still know of other grass which can provide roughage?

Oat, wheat, barley, rye, coastal, brome, Bahia and Sudan grass hays. Different regions offer different varieties of hay.

Are you in Asia? If so, this site is one where you can order hay if it is hard to find in your country. http://www.brio-life.sg/
