So Cleo is nearly 4 months old and recently she has started thumping! Just out of no where. She will be in her cage and do it, be inside and do it in her inside cage (I bring her in when its too hot) and even when running around on my bed when jumping around.

I have read its supposed to mean they are scared but she was laying down in her cage before and got up and started thumping her back legs.

I’m worried, why would she be doing this.

In the wild, thumping is used to alert other rabbits of possible danger. Domestic rabbits often thump when they hear strange noises. My bunny Olivia will thump whenever she hears any sort of loud crunching (like us eating something crunchy), clicking or tapping sounds, etc. Sometimes my bunnies thump during the middle of the night and I have no idea why.

Is it possible she is hearing noises, outside perhaps? Just a wild guess, but maybe she’s just discovered thumping and is experimenting with it. I wouldn’t be worried, though.

Sometimes rabbits thump when they want to show their displeasure of something. Wooly will thump when he sees the carrier. Sometimes after I groom him and set him down, he will run into the corner and then thump at me. Rabbits will thump for different reasons and sometimes we have no clue what is going on in their little bunny heads. Maybe you can try looking at the bigger context of the situation. Was anything else going on when she thumped?

She’s telling you she might be scared. My bunny has a hutch outside and loud planes bother him. One time he woke up our neighbours at two! That’s why I called him thumper

I have to agree with LPT, I really think he’s probably hearing a noise that you’re not noticing.

You would watch her body language when she does it also — because I know quite a few members on the forums have buns that actually thump when they get really excited about something. Or right before they binky. Watch her body language, specifically her ears and the way she is standing. Does she look alert at the time? This will probably help you figure out whether it’s an upset/annoyance or simply her just being goofy.

Foo thumps when she is upset or displeased with something us humans have done, or.if she hears something that scares her, like when our neighbors were working on landscaping over.the summer. She will also run up to us and thump if she feels we arent giving her enough attention or treats.
