I just got a new bunny. The previous owners no longer had time for him. He is a five year old male rex. When I picked him up I asked about his diet and they said they feed him 80% pelts and the rest vegetables and fruits. From what I read online this does not seem to be the best diet. Could someone please answer me on how I bring in a new diet when he was on his old one for so long. Do I jump right to it or will that upset him?

Welcome Zo and congrats on your new rabbit!

Is he getting any hay at all? Or just the pellets and veggies? How much pellets (measured amount) is he getting or is it unlimited?

It was unlimited amount just poured into his bowl. He also was getting alfalfa hay. Barely any veggies

This is what I would do – he needs to get grass hay which would be timothy or orchard (those are the most popular and the easiest to find but there are others) – alfalfa is not the right choice for hay. I would try to get him to start eating grass hay – it’s pretty important.

Then I would slowly introduce him to different veggies.

Lastly I would start measuring his pellets and see how much he really is eating – you want to make this eventually the smallest part of his diet but you don’t want to go “cold turkey” on decreasing them.

I think you are right to transition his diet slowly and starting with the grass hay would be where I would begin.

I was in a similar situation when I first adopted my Royal. His previous owners never fed him hay — only pellets and sometimes veggies. Slowly start decreasing his pellets and give him lots of hay! He probably wont be very interested in the hay, but give it time. He wont let himself starve, so he will eventually take to the hay. Also, have his teeth checked. Since he’s never really had hay, he may have some teeth problems.

Is hay straight from a farm ok? I will defiantly take him for a vet check up

Yes, hay from a farm should be just fine.
