I understand digging is regular bunny behaviour…the only problem is Winnie is a house rabbit that likes to dig her litter tray. This mean litter=everywhere. I feel bad trying to stop her as its normal behaviour but I also can’t put up with having to throw away clean litter, cleaning it up three times a day or worry about her peeing everywhere cause her litter is everywhere.

I’ve tried more toys, distraction, more things to chew. My rabbits are inside 24/7 and don’t have an outside run as I only have gravel out the back. I’ve been living here a year and so much has broken I haven’t been able to afford to get it lawned yet.

Any suggestions? Shes only recently started doing it.

Should I squirt water? Or should I just let her be?

Perhaps you could give her something else she could dig on? You can give her carpet scraps, grass mats (sold here!), a blanket or towel, a cardboard box, or a phone book! Re-direct her digging to another object.

No, don’t squirt water at her. I would get a grate to put over the litter like they sell on BinkyBunny – that will keep the litter in and probably distract her from digging since it won’t be as much fun.

My buns have a BAD digging habit — on everything! We usually keep towels laying around for them to dig into now. Which seems to have distracted a lot of their digging behavior as they love that they can dig, push it around, and tear at it all in one play toy!

I definitely wouldn’t squirt her as I could see that causing her to not go in her litter box at all.

Hey all, thanks for your replies. I didn’t want to squirt water at her anyway, seeing as really shes not behaving badly. Unfortunately no one in the UK stocks trays with grates on and Binky Bunny doesn’t ship over here. Other wise both of my buns would have that type of tray. That and I’ve had to give Winnie a corner one, she had a lovely big tray but sits so far back she pees outside the tray lol.

This is the issue, she has toys to chew, she has bits of cardboard she likes to throw around and she also has a cardboard box and a towel. All in her cage. I’m not sure how to turn her attention from the tray to the towel. Originally she loved messing with the towel.

What about a litter box with a rim like this:
