I was holding Charlie, and he became kind of scared and struggled to get away. Then all of a sudden both my husband and I could smell this awful skunk smell. It was identical to that of a skunk. Is that coming from Charlie? Could he have gas or something? I put him back and don’t smell it anymore, and he doesn’t seem to smell like it anymore. It was very weird.

They have glands ont heir rear end that can make very skunky smells, and often if they get scared they will get the scent.

Does that change at all if they get neutered?

Not in my experience, Smudge still gets it now and then when she gets scared. It’s a defence mechanism.

OK. I cleaned him out, but he was VERY, VERY clean down there. There was hardly anything and it didn’t really smell. I hope that takes care of it. Could it just be that no matter how clean they are when they are very scared they will release some scent?

I think neutering helps a little bit. My females smell was much worse before she was spayed. And my male scented more often before neutering. But, yeah when scared or upset or wanting to mark they create some scent. It doesn’t last long at least.

I think neutering helps too. Wooly would spray quite often when he was little. After he was neutered, he doesn’t do it as much. Not saying he never does it though. LOL
