I bought the rabbits an Oxbow grass thing yesterday. It is a solid cylinder shape (like a barrel) with a little hole in each end. I think it is meant to be a hamster house, but I thought the rabbits could play with it. I took the plastic shrink wrap off and gave it to them last night. Today I went in their room to see if they wanted a treat. I looked at the floor and saw little clear bead-like things all over. At first I didn’t know what they were or where they came from. Then I saw the grass thing and saw they had chewed the end off. I realized there much have been a silica gel packet inside. I looked at the packaging I threw away. It said in small print to throw the packet away before giving to your pet. Holy crap! It must have been inside the cylinder. I picked up as many of the little silica gel beads as I could find. Problem is, I have no clue where the packet is. I’m afraid one of them may have eaten it. Who knows if they ate any of the silica gel. I’m such an idiot! What should I do? Will they be okay?!

Not toxic. It’s just a salt I think. It says not for consumption but I can’t remember if my dog ate one or someone on here had a bunny eat one; my memory is great but short…anyways we looked it up with poison control etc and it’s totally safe for consumption Just may have a tummy upset

            Hi LBJ,
I agree with KNK, not toxic and they usually don’t fill them so there would only be a few beads in a satchel…. I would make sure they have plenty of hay and water and watch for any changes or discomfort.

What about the actual packet? It’s obvious most of the silica spilled out onto the floor. But the packet is missing. I don’t know if it was paper or fabric or what.

I would say paper is most likely. Can you contact the manufacturer or supplier and ask them. I don’t think they would have eaten it if it was plastic.

KokaneeandKahlua: You may have been thinking of me. I posted on BB last summer about it. I bought one of those oxbow timothy toys for my foster rabbit and it had a package of those in there and I didn’t know it. He ripped it open and I found little beads every where and wasn’t sure if he ate any! I freaked out and called the vet. The receptionist talked to the vet directly and told me it was fine but to just make sure he has plenty of fresh water as they are made to absorbe water. He was fine and didn’t get sick.

I think Oxbow needs to have some sort of warning on the package to remind people to take it out!

Edit: Oops Tough you were Jerseygirl for some reason! Changed it to KK

I was just reading your old post Mocha…. The pack looked like one of the Tyvek ones which is a polythene blend which is probably why Sebastian didn’t eat it. So LBJ if you can’t find the pack I’d say definitely paper and that too shall pass !

Roberta – I can call Oxbow, but I don’t think I could get anyone right now. It is conveniently a Sunday night.

Mocha – Funny you should say that. There is a note at the very end of the instructions. It’s in such tiny print though. I didn’t look at it too closely.

True Mocha. Seriously though, what’s to know about a hay toy? You unwrap it and plop it in front of your buns. =p
                          Thanks for the link!

My puppy ate one a long time ago. Eating it just dehydrates you because it’s in shoes and stuff to absorb moisture. Not toxic.

I second the suggestion that you encourage some eating and drinking of good food and water so whatever got consumed gets gone. Hopefully, by now that’s happened and it’s a moot point.

K&K – I never knew the content of those packets and have been leary of them. I am actually reassured to learn that they are a more natural substance. Always thought they were worse than you described. Thank you, and thanks Mocha, for teaching an old FL new info.

I freshened their hay stash last night and gave them their nightly treats. When I put them to bed, they gobbled up their pellets like they were nothing. Both seem fine this morning. Their water bottle was drained though, so I refilled it. That’s about it so far. Leopold was being unusually affectionate. I petted him and gave him a kiss on the head. Wooly has sitting in his usual spot (avoiding me).

I agree with Mocha, Oxbow should put a big warning on the front package to take it out.
