Someone from my mom’s work gave her a Christmas present that included two little bags of treats for small animals. One is little sweet potato drops and the other is some kind of kiwi fruit. I’m not really sure if they are safe for bunnies to eat, despite the picture of a bunny on a package. Yes or no to these?

How nice! I would probably say no to the sweet potato – Kiwi is listed as okay on the HRS Veggie/Fruit list by Dr. Brown. Is the kiwi just freeze dried or something?

Yeah, if you send us a brand I’m sure one of us could easily look up the ingredients for you and tell you what we think!

Both packages are the All Living Things brand, “Perfect treat for hamsters, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other small animals”.

Sweet Potato: Sugar, dried whey, vegetable oil, dried whey protein concentrate, dried sweet potato, corn flour, lecithin, fd&c yellow #5, fd&c Yellow #6

Kiwi: Kiwi preserved with sulfur dioxide, sugar.

I would probably say no to the kiwi as well since it seems they have added sugar.

Maybe you can put these out for the birds and squirrels…I bet they squirrels will definitely appreciate this!

Yeh it’s a waste but I’d throw out the sweet potato treats. A harsh thing to learn as pet owners is that treats and food are marketed and produced for owners not pets. Often the ingredients are inappropriate or junk food-I’d say 99% of the food and treats for dogs are totally inappropriate and I wouldn’t feed to my dog. The same is true if not more so for rabbits. Almost all treats and toys sold in pet stores for rabbits are not rabbit food. The kiwi treats sound fine but I’d toss the potato treats
If your then looking for appropriate treats, think fruit (dried is fine, just no added oil or sugar), hay cubes etc. Toys often are junky but those sold on sites like Binkybunny are safe appropriate and rabbit tested

I have seen that brand. They carry it at Petsmart. Perhaps you could try returning them? I’m not sure they will let you or not, but since they were a gift maybe they will. Then you could get something better.

Me too, LBJ. OR maybe you could even try to exchange them. We buy a treat called NibbleRings that is at PetSmart. My buns go ape over them. All the things we bought that are All Living Things turned out to be bad for the buns (we bought them before we bought our bun and learned the difference!).

I try to give Dutchess only things that are just what they are, such as raisins as a treat. The ingredient list is just raisins, nothing added, I never give her the stuff like what’s in the sweet potato treats. I could maybe put them outside, but it’s like 10 degrees F here and wintery, and we do have a few wild rabbits around, so I think the best thing is to just toss them. I had opened the sweet potato bag, so I don’t think it’s worth it to try and take back the bags.

Thanks everyone! Dutchess’ tummy thanks you as well.
