        Hello everyone!
I just got back from the SPCA (where Mocha got fixed). He’s been acting well, but not eating his favorite treats as usual. I gave him a little bit of cilantro and he ate it!  The vet gave him pain medication that lasts for 24 hours, but didn’t even give me any. They said if he needed additional medicine, I have to contact them. Should I be worried about that?
Anyway, I have absolutely no idea what to do. Once I let him out of his carrier, he hopped to a corner and sat there, so I made a little cage for him there so he can’t jump anywhere. I put water (which he drank almost immediately), his litterbox, a blanket, some hay, and some treats. Should I leave the cage like that for a few days? Or should I let him have free range? Also, should I feed him some more vegetables and pellets?
All he is doing now is laying down. Poor Mocha.

He also seems to be licking his stitches. How do I prevent that?

Awww, MochaBunny! Sending lots of healing vibes for your boy!

Hmmm… I would start by calling the vet and asking for more pain meds, usually Metacam is what they will give you. It really sounds like to me that your bun may still be in pain. My boy munched down a whole dinner when he came home but we could tell immediately when his pain meds started wearing off because he began sitting in a corner uncomfortably and didn’t seem interested in food. Another dose of Metacam perked him right back up!

I would definitely give him more veggies if that’s what he’ll eat right at the moment! Wet them down so you know he’s keeping hydrated although I do see you said he drank water which is good. I wouldn’t let him free-range since they really should be confined after the procedure to ensure they don’t tear open the area. My buns licked their stitches a tid bit. You can get an e-collar from the vet usually but when we used them on our buns they really just went crazy and I was too worried they would injure themselves so I would only put an e-collar on him if it’s absolutely necessary. Also, my boy wolfed down a huge bowl of pellets when he came home so giving him pellets won’t hurt him and will help you monitor and make sure he doesn’t stop eating/drinking.

Okay, I’ll call the vet tomorrow morning for some more meds! Mocha was just now eating a lot cilantro, parsley, and dill! Yay!! I can definently see a huge improvement on him since he got home, but he is still lying down. Poor bun. ):
His cage is a 2×4. I made it out of an x-pen and he will stay there for the rest of today and most of tomorrow (maybe all of tomorrow, it depends how he is)!
Thank you so much tanlover14 for the information, it definently helped me

Congrats on the neuter and vibes for a quick recovery for Mocha .

I agree with tanlover – having meds on hand is definitely a good idea. If there’s something he’s eating, then I would by all means encourage him to eat more of it (as long as it isn’t too sweet). Definitely do restrict his movement…I’d say for tomorrow too. Licking the stitches should be alright, but just make sure that he doesn’t try to tear them out.

Yay for a successful neuter! How is your bun today? Is he still licking at the stitches?

He doesn’t seem to be licking his stitches too much today! He has been hopping in and out of his litterbox the whole night. He has eaten some hay, pellets, and all of his veggies!! More good news: He just flopped!

Yay! So happy your boy is doing better! From my experience (and the experience of others on here) it seems the boys perk back up a lot quicker than females. Happy to see he’s eating more and FLOPS! Sounds like he’s getting a long fine now, just a tough first day!!

Mocha is recovering faster than I thought. He seems to be himself now. He actually escaped his cage when I wasn’t looking and started hopping around. Don’t worry; he was only out for like a minute. I was just wondering if he really NEED the pain meds? He’s eating fine, acting fine, etc.

Piglet never needed the extra meds… He spent a night and half a day napping then was back to his old self. Gave me the stinkeye for a few days but was still drinking and enjoying his food the whole time.

He probably doesn’t need them if he’s acting fine. We gave our boy a dose every night (vet gave him a 5 day dosage) but he seemed fine after two and by the third day he REFUSED, flat out refused to take any more. We let him go without and he didn’t seem in any pain or anything of the sort. If he does start to look uncomfortable or in pain, I’d give him the meds as soon as possible so it doesn’t affect his eating and such.

Okay thank you (: When do you think I should let him have free-range?

Also, I check his incision twice a day. I can’t really see an incision, but I can see his privates. It’s a bit swollen, each of them being about the size of a thumb. They have a pinkish color to them. I can also see a bit of dried blood on one, most likely being from the surgery yesterday. Is that normal? ):

Actually, a bit smaller than a thumb.

It can be normal for some swelling before they shrivel, but it’s always good to double check any concerns you may have with your vet. Is he still licking the incision and area quite a bit? I would ring your vet tomorrow just to check in with your questions before the weekend!
