Currently we have our Dexter in a living world cage with a ledge. We line the bottom of the cage with carefresh bedding which is the same as what’s in his litter box. (We tried carefresh litter in his litter box but he didn’t like it). Ive noticed that he uses the litter box about half the time and the rest of his cage the remainder of the time. I’ve read this could be because he can’t tell the difference between the two. As a result I’m thinking of just putting bedding in his litter box and leaving the rest of his cage bare plastic. Is this ok? I’m worried about him getting sore hocks without the padding but he sits on the plastic ledge most of the time anyway. The floor of his room has indoor/outdoor carpeting but I don’t want to put that in his cage because I can see him eating it.

        Any advice would be appreciated.

Take the bedding out. Do you have an exercise pen? You could make a set up with a pen attached to his cage so he can sit on the carpeting if he chooses.

Yes, having litter in the litterbox and cage bottom will be too confusing. Take the litter out of the cage. He should be fine on the plastic cage bottom, or you can give him a towel or fleece blanket to lay on (altho most buns just move them out of the way). Finally, has he been neutered already? If not, some of the toilet confusion may also be due to hormones and his need to mark his space.

Put some grassy mats or like the other posters said, a fleece or sheepskin blanket or bed. When my Bun was younger he would move them out of the way and lay on the plastic haha, but it’s good to have something for their feet. You can tell if they are struggling on the plastic or their feet get irritated. Also take them out to play on some carpeting or something. I found a cheap rug (ten bucks) at Ikea’s “as-is” section and it fills almost the whole room. I don’t know where you are located but maybe you can find something similar. You can even get less expensive fleece if you have a fabric store nearby, though my Bun chews it so you just have to watch that.

Thanks for the advice. I’m going to switch things around tomorrow so we will see. Ill leave the plastic until I can find a mat that will fit. He does have carpet where he plays so that should help. Like I said he spends most of his time on the plastic ledge anyway.

I have the same cage as you

I just have bedding in his litter box. the bottom and ledge are just the plastic. It doesn’t bother his feet and he regularly lounges on the ledge despite the cage door being open.

Agree with Zoologist. I think I have the same cage also!
