So as  a few people may know, last summer my rabbit Milo passed away from a digestive issue. The vet told us that the hay I was feeding them was too dry and he could not digest it. The thing is, he also told me to start feeding my rabbits alfalfa hay and more pellets, which made me a bit weary as to if he actually knew all that much about rabbits.

Anyways, it is several months later now and we still have several bales of this orchard grass left. We stored it all and it is still in fine condition. We got it from our friend who is a farmer so it is all natural orchard grass that he feeds his rabbits, and I am wondering if you guys would think it would be safe to use it again? I would not give it to them 100%, I would mix it in with their current hay (Oxbow timothy hay). What do you think?

        Thanks!

Orchard grass hay is perfectly fine for rabbits. I’m a little wary of your vet too, alfalfa should only be for babies and elderly buns, and nursing mamas.

As long as the hay hasn’t gotten wet or been infested with any kind of bug, it should be safe to use still.

Dittoing Monkeybun on everything she has said.
Just reiterating that Orchard is fine as a mix or even as a stand alone hay. Some people only feed Orchard (due to allergies or their bunny’s preference) and it is perfectly fine. I have never heard of hay being too dry..hmmm. That is a new one for me.

Okay thank you! I am glad it’s okay to use the hay, because I have so much of it and I don’t want it to go to waste!

Have to agree — my buns are fed only Orchard Grass (as my boyfriend is allergic to Timothy) and they love it.

I’ve never heard of a vet saying the hay is too dry? That sounds weird. Why did he tell you to feed more pellets if you don’t mind me asking? Some people successfully feed no pellets and a very well-rounded veggie diet. Although, my vet suggests a little under 1/4 cup for my 4 1/2 pound rabbits, she would never say to up more unless they were looking really skinny. That sounds really sketchy in my opinion.
