inside bunny

My parents gave me the final OKAY to have my bunny Daisy as a inside bunny! Later this week we are going to the store to get the supplies to make the pen for her. Is a 3 by 3 pen too small? the biggest I can go is about 4 by 4 or 4 by 3. I am thinking about doing a 4 by 3. My room is really small.

 

I will be making a rectangle out of the supplies I am getting but leaving off a small part of , or 1 wall to put on of these in place of it.

 

Is there any other things I need to get to prep. for my indoor bunny?

HI BD, I really think you can save yourselves some time and money by going Xpen. These are available in stores from about $30 or online for about the same some place include delivery some don’t. They come in a flat pack of usually six panels, you would need atleast a 36 inch high set. The beauty of the is they can be erected in any shape and you can add and remove panels. I have used 3 packs in y bunny room to create a T shaped barrier. You can also use individual panels to exclude areas.

 

 

You can also set it up in an L shape to enclose a corner of your room. Seriously, it will save you and your Dad time and money and get little daisy inside so much faster… What you will need to add is a good sized water dish or bottle, solid bowls for food that can’t be knocked over, a little box for hiding and sleeping and a cat litter tray that you can line with news paper put hay in for eating and to encourage good litter habits as she will sit in the tray and eat and do her business at the same time. Its also a lot easier to keep clean.

I also think the xpens is probably a better idea because I had a material carrier similar to the picture you have shown but with in 3 days my buns had chewed through it! So I had to go out and buy a plastic one. So I would be concerned your bun might chew its way out like mine did.

Oh, a shower curtain or something water resistant covered by a cotton mat is a good way to protect your floor under the pen.

I completely agree with Roberta — You should definitely just do an x-pen style cage.

In the stors where I live, we dint have xpens. and I was looking everwhere online and the cheepest that I found one was $24 but shipping was $19 and it took up to 5 to 12 weeks to get it to me.And the wrie I found was $28 dollers, and it in in a store near my town. Oh and thanks Roberta about the shower curtain under the stuff. I have soft wood, and her pee would sink into it, and I was thinking about just using a tarp under blankets and sheets. Thanks for saving me quite a few bucks!

Amazon has them for $40 free shipping, will be there in 5-7 days. Wood, screws, rabbit wire, and time etc will add up, you might want to do a cost comparison. An added benefit of the xpen is it can be compacted for space if necessary.

The petsmart one is wayyy to small and won’t keep a bunny in.
The drfosterandsmith one is plastic, which bunnies have been known to chew through. Even if chewing isn’t a problem now, it’s important to consider it could be and to plan accordingly

Sam and Lady’s Human — I can’t help but laugh at what you said about it being too small, I found that out the hard way!

Definitely don’t do the PetSmart one, it’s not big enough and we learned from experience! I bought that one when we brought home our first little bun! We bought it right before we went to pick him up. Needless to say, the little booger was only about 2 lbs. and 2 months old. That PetSmart one did absolutely NOTHING. We put it around the couch so he could get used to us and hop around our feet while we watched TV. His little tiny booger butt was over that thing in about a minute flat. It is absolutely useless! LOL. Your 6-9 lb bun would be over that in a heart beat!

Honestly, I wouldn’t even touch both of those pens. Those are way too small for bunnies. Just because a bunny is a ‘small animal,’ it does not mean they are happy and content in a small amount of room. They need room to hop, jump, run, binky, stand up on their legs, and flop. I would really take Sam and Lady’s Human’s suggestion on the pen from Amazon. I have ordered from a dog x-pen from them and they are fast and very convenient.

  If you do get a pen from Doctors Foster and Smith, then this is the pen you should get:

 It is what we use for Toshi and Paige and it is very durable, while still allowing them the space to move freely.

Snowy that is a good one for floor space, but if you have a persistent bunny, 29 inches is nothing 36″ is really better for safety

I agree with what everyone is saying here but by the sounds of things it has taken you a little while to get your parents on board with this. If it was me I would buy a temporary cage until you can get something better – that way there is no time for your parents to change their minds. If you think that wouldn’t be an issue though you should get a better cage from the start !

another thing to consider…if you have some kind of hidey house for your pet to snuggle in that they are able to jump on top of, they will easily hop out of a lower height xpen. also, for right now i’d ask around to see if anyone you know has any sort of cage you can temporarily borrow to keep your rabbit in, because a few days/week in a too small cage is way better than having him out in freezing temperatures.
