        Hi,

Socks is 3.5 months old, and she’s taken to pulling her hay out of the rack to make a pile, and digging in it…

I’ve noticed over the past few days that she sneezes when she’s burrowing in the hay. She has no discharge from eyes or nose, and she’s not slowing down at all in terms of her activity level, but in the space of 15 minutes playing in the hay she’ll sneeze about 4–5 times.

This is the only time she seems to be sneezing… I’m going to start shaking her hay out before giving it to her, but in the meantime, should I be worried? Do I need to make an emergency trip to the vet?

        Thanks for your help!

I am not a et, but it does sound like the hay dust is the culprit since she only sneezes when she’s digging in her hay. No discharge or physical ailments accompanying the sneezing, so it doesn’t sound like an emergency.

The only thing that is just slightly concerning is the number of times your bunny sneezes. Once or twice isn’t a big deal, but when I tell my vet about sneezing (when I had a bunny who sneezed more), she would always ask me if it was just a couple of times or a few times in a row, and if it was a few times in a row, then that could be cause for concern. So, if there is a nasal or tooth issue that is just made worse by the dust then that would be cause for concern, but at this point I don’t see it as an emergency unless it is accompanied by other physical symptoms.

Start shaking out the hay and see if that helps. If it doesn’t, then make an appointment with a rabbit savvy vet to make sure there isn’t some other underlying issue that is just made worse by hay dust or some irritant.

I agree with the previous post. When I took my bunny in to be neutered and asked the vet about his sneezing he was more concerned about the multiple sneezes in a row. My bunny did need to be treated with some medications for the sneezing. I would keep an eye out for any changes or discharge from the nose in your bunny and try some environmental changes with the hay. Then if it does not go away, get it checked out.

Sounds like a checkup with the vet might be needed. As everyone else has said, it’s the fact that it’s 4-5 sneezes in a row that’s concern. Everyone sneezes, and that’s normal, but when they’re sneezing “fits,” that’s when it’s not normal.

My bunny was sneezing a little more than normal, but I wasn’t concerned because it only happened with fresh hay and was just the one sneeze occasionally, and never even 2 in a row. Now, it’s cleared up. Still getting a checkup because there’s some other stuff along with the sneezing that I want to look into. I would definitely recommend it, though.

              Always better safe than sorry!
