Ok, so they are like cecals almost, but he doesn’t eat them? They’re just on the bottom if his cage on his newspaper. I’m worried he’ll then go on to lie in them and such. Ill attach a photo so you guys can take a look. He hasn’t had any veggies in the past week, and he is about 12 weeks old so he’s on a pellet and hay diet. He gets unlimited hay and as many pellets as he wishes. Does he have diahrea? Should I take him to the vets?  I don’t want my baby to be ill!

The picture makes them look black, but they’re well and truly brown. I don’t know what to do

Yep, They’re cecals and its not unusual to get the odd extra few especially when they are little. Good idea to remove them when you see them as they do tend to stick to their fur. Extra cecals generally means they are eating a little more of the good stuff than they should be, it might be tie to reduce his pellets a little. How much does he have now ?

At twelve weeks you could start introducing greens slowly, if he is having more than half a cup a day of pellets they need to be slowly reduced.
You could try tempting him with a couple of little salads to start… Maybe some celery leaves, sweet basil, bok choy or parsley. Not too much maybe a quarter cup twice a day.

Hi Bunnygirl, How is young Apollo today. Any change in the cecal volume ????
If it is still lots a vet check up wouldn’t hurt, its always a good idea to have them in for a general exam in the beginning.

. He gets a quarter of a cup a day. And hay. I’m going to start introducing greens now! thank you! Yeah, there is still the odd one in the bottom of his cage, but it’s not as bad. Yesterday when ‘creating’ the cecals, he seemed to push and strain a bit. Like, sitting on his haunches and shaking a little like he was pushing. That’s not normal is it?

Hmmm, No its not, straining of any kind is not good. Is he still doing it ?

Also have you made any changes to his diet since you took him home. Sudden changes can cause tummy and bowel upsets.

He’s not doing it now I don’t think. His other poops are normal upon close inspection of his litter tray. The only change is that I’m slowly changing him onto peters pellets, the ones from Coles. That’s it. And it’s over a period of 2 weeks. I would have done longer, but in the bag of his old food that the breeder gave me, I found a maggot this morning! Could that have anything to do with things?! Don’t worry, I threw the bag out straight away and made sure he didn’t get anymore. I haven’t noticed these in there before, so maybe it happened here? A fly flew in and layed it’s eggs? Should I get him into the vets pronto?

Slow change is the best and mine thrive on the Peters Pellets…
Fly’s don’t actually lay eggs, when you see those little bunches of short yellow fibres that look like eggs, that’s live maggots. A fly could have gotten in and left one behind they do grow very quickly.(If it was very advanced it could have been in there a while and it would depend on the species)
Nope, I’d say that the change of pellets was just a little quick for his tummy, but as you said, not a lot of options I would have tossed the bag too. Do you know what brand the breeder was feeding ? I won’t buy the ones from that chain store Pet City, when I checked them out they are made purely for lab animals and the fat and salt levels are excessive and the fibre is way too low (They are manufactured in WA). The Peters Pellets aren’t perfect but they are the closest to healthy that are readily available.
As I said a primiliminary vet check up is a good idea in any circumstance…. I do feel that the change in pellets certainly contributed but I don’t think they would cause the straining unless the old pellets were unbelievably low in fibre and very high in fat.
