She’s never allowed anyone too walk up and pick her up, and she usually takes off running, today I dropped a few dried pieces of pineapple on her bed, and she sniffed all around before eating them, I’m kinda thinking maybe her eyesight is keeping her so standoffish. Once I pick her up and talk to her she settles down, but, won’t usually let me get close just walking up. Do you think she’s losing her eyesight?

It takes a bit of sniffing around to find most treats I drop for her………………………

Most buns really don’t enjoy being picked up – so it may not be just her eyesight and if it is her eyesight the picking up will only continue to stress her out. I would discourage from picking her up and possibly taking her to the vet to see what is going on with her eyesight.

Also, bunnies don’t see all that well to begin with, it seems; for one thing, they have that blind spot right in front of their face because of the way their eyes are placed on their heads. You can test Velvet’s vision by watching how she moves around your house; is she bumping into furniture, or other objects, etc.? How do her eyes look? Are they cloudy, or different in any way? If she isn’t having problems navigating her environment and her eyes look healthy, I’d say she’s okay. Most rabbits definitely don’t like to be picked up, like tanlover14 said, so I wouldn’t worry about her running away when someone approaches her with that in mind. We give off so many nonverbal clues about what we are about to do, and rabbits are very attuned to those kinds of gestures, being prey species.

She gets around okay, seems like there’s always gooey eye matter on her eyes though, and it’s awful hard to try and remove that, so, most of the time I just leave it on her eyes………………….

Have you tried consulting a vet about that gooey substance? Does it seem to bother her?

Not a bit but, it would bother me.

If you think it’s excessive – and it sounds like it probably is – you should have your vet check her out. She could have a bacterial infection or possibly an allergy.

With regards to her taking time to find treats, my buns are often the same. You have to remember how different their vision is from ours since they have eyes on the sides of their heads.

                         This is how rabbits see:

That’s good to know, she searches like she can’t find it right in front of her nose.

My buns also sniff around for them when I put them on the floor, even if it’s right in front of them. I wouldn’t worry too much about it unless she starts running into normal things when walking around.
