Im new to rabbit ownership. I found a bunny and rescued him. He was litterbox trained, but he insists on pooping outside of the box daily. He poops mostly inside, but when I am at work or asleep he does about 10 or so intentionally outside the box. I think he is just being lazy. Please help.

It sounds like he’s doing just fine. For a litter-trained rabbit, you want 100% of the pee in the box and at least 90% of the poop in the box. Another thing that may be happening is that he is kicking the poop out, or one is sticking to his foot and falls off when he jumps out.

I have a small hand vac that I use to suck up the dozen or so “rogue poops” each morning. It’s not really a big deal. I’d consider yourself very lucky!

No, this is typical – many rabbits will drop some poops outside their box because they are marking their territory. Luckily rabbit poop is very easy to pick up and clean up. Even the most litter trained rabbits may have some stray poops and it’s not necessarily them being lazy.

            Has he been neutered?

Sarita and Beka are right. However if he is pooping outside the box a lot, then what you should do is place the poop pellets back in the litter box. This will let them know that is where it belongs. You can also put a treat or a little bit of hay in the box to encourage pooping/peeing in there. If there is only a little poop outside of the box, then that is normal.

Thanks guys I do put them back in the litter box, hopefully he will get the hint. I thought maybe there was a special training secret since I don’t know much of anything about rabbits! The poops are not accidental, it is intentional. I caught him just after the fact yesterday right was where he was laying down sat up pooped and laid back down

Ps. No he has not been neutered. It is expensive performed by the preferred vet and I am paranoid about a low cost facility after doing some searching. Besides, i wish I could get him “hooked up” before I chop off his you know what’s

What do you mean you want to get him “hooked up”? If you mean breed him, then we definitely do not suggest you do this and we prohibit talks of breeding on our forum. You definitely don’t want to breed him simply because there are so many homeless rabbits in shelters and rescues and finding rabbits homes is not an easy task.

I don’t know about “breeding” per se. Just seems mean to cut off the bunny balls with out ever “having” a lady — at least that is what all my guy friends keep telling me. LOL

Once he’s neutered, you have the option of getting another rabbit (male or female) and bonding them for companionship. This will allow him to enjoy having a friend for life without the stress of baby bunnies every 30 days…

I am a new bunny owner as well and I’m having a problem with poo! My rabbit is very good going number 1 in his litter box at all times, but he almost never poops in his litter box. I have to wait for him to hop out of the cage, and then clean it up. The bedding is nice with hay on top, he only has carpet in the rest of his cage. I tried doing the thing where I pick up the poops and put them in the litter box but it’s not working. I’ve even let it get really dirty to show him that’s where he goes, but he won’t poop in there. I’ve put it in his favorite corner, reward him when he goes poo in it (when I catch him). He’s about a year old and he’s not neutered, I’m doing that monday. Will the neutering stop this? it’s getting to be quite a hassle, cleaning it up every morning, afternoon, and at night. And I feel bad that  he’s walking around in a dirty cage. Any advice is welcome!

My rabbit does the same and I don’t really mind it, i know most of it happens in the litter box so I happy for that but what I do find a problem is when I let her out on the couch she pees AND poops allover it. The couch is the only place outside her cage where she can roam because she is so so TINY.

Teri- Neutering often helps litter box habits. Do you put hay in his litter box? This often encourages bunnies to use it more often.

yeah I always put hay in there because I know they like to munch on it while they do their business.
