Bunnyboy is 1 yr old and I have had him for 7 weeks.  He is not neutered.  He has been using his litter box consistently since I found him. His cage is set up with a crate/bed in one corner, water bowl in another, litter box in the third corner and his hay in the last corner.  The bottom of his cage is plastic, so I line the bottom with beach towel. In the hay corner, I have a hand towel that I put his hay bowl on top of. This way, I can just scoop up the towel with any hay bits and poops and shake it in the trashcan.

For the past week and a half, he has been pushing his bowl out from the corner and peeing there.  Once I saw him with his front paws in the bowl, tush in the corner, taking a whiz!

Litter has not changed, diet has not changed, so I thought maybe he was mad at his hay.  I had been giving him Kaytee with sweet potato and shook out as much of the sweet potato as I could.  He would dive in his bowl and dig for the few I left in there.  I thought maybe he was mad that he couldn’t find anymore so he decided he would pee on the hay. He was still using his litter box at this point. I changed to Oxbow, which he likes, and I cleaned the cage with vinegar and he was fine for half a day and did again.  This time I used and enzyme cleaner. He was ok for a day and a half and then did it several times for the next two days and did not use the litterbox, just this corner.  This last time, I did the above but also changed the arrangement of what was in each corner, to see if he was smelling the pee and using that corner because of lingering odor.

He was fine for three days, using the litterbox, like a good bunny and all of a sudden, he pushed the bowl out from the corner and peed.

i don’t think this is a neutering issue, since he was fine for so long.  He is normal in all other respects, eating, sleeping, playing, etc.

        Any insight/advice?

          What size is his cage?

Two feet by four feet. He is about 4 3/4 lbs. a Mini Rex, I believe. He also gets time out in the evening in an x pen for about an hour and a half. I extend it around his cage.  I clean his cage then and sit with him.

Yeah, that’s still not very adequate – you would be better off giving him the pen to stay in – he needs to be able to totally stretch out and have all of his stuff in a cage – if it was 2 stories you could do that but one story even for a small rabbit in a cage this size, it really is too small. And really if he is only get 1 1/2 hours of time outside in his pen, that’s not truly adequate – I say do away with the cage and do the pen so you can give him more room.

I am going to be getting him a two story hutch after the holidays.    But I don’t feel that is why he suddenly started to pee in this corner by his hay. He is not doing it anywhere else but where the hay is. He uses the litterbox when out of his cage, also.

Any chance you can rearrange the cage and put the liter box in that corner. Bunnies often pick a corner that is their corner to do their business. If your bun has chosen one specific area, then try to accommodate him. And I agree with Sarita, as soon as your able, a new pen is a must.

Cinnabun is quite right about them picking their own corners — sometimes as hard as you want to give them a corner to pee in they will choose somewhere else to be their favorite spot. Considering it’s his “space” I would allow him the option to pee in whichever corner he prefers and then set the rest of the cage up accordingly. Way easier solution than attempting to force him to stop.
