So I have been into making homemade toys lately and I decided to do a little research on whats “really” in Toilet paper and Paper towel. I know some people on here have let there rabbit have a whole roll of toilet paper to destroy so I thought it was ok until I read what it was made from.

So paper towel and tissues are made from virgin wood pulp wood pulp which is what some rabbit safe litter is made from. Toilet paper is made from recycled paper. I was excited and thought I could use these products until I found out that they add bleach to the paper pulp to make it white. They say its “harmless” but I would think it wouldn’t be safe for our pets to ingest it. Just wanted to tell you what I have found out and ask what your thoughts were about it?

It doesn’t at all answer your question, but this is just the toilet paper itself, not the roll right? I’ve always given Pippa the rolls left over whenever they’re completely clean (no toilet paper residue left on them, though I can’t remember the brand that doesn’t have anything holding the paper on). She used to play with them but now she mostly seems to devour them.

Yes just the paper not the tp roll.

I’m picky about which tubes I let my buns have. I never give the white tubes because I figure there is bleach in those. I only give tubes that have no visible glue residue left on them.

The toilet paper toys I’ve seen and used are almost exclusively the inner roll after all the sheets have gone, and is not dyed but the natural grey/brown of the cardboard. I’ve actually not known of using the toilet paper or paper towels themselves to play with. (Cats do that when you’re not looking, but that’s another story.) We’ve always encouraged people to give their bunnies phone books made of paper with soy-based ink to shred.

It’s always mine until the roll is gone, then instead of tossing the TP roll when it’s devoid of all glue and little paper bits, I toss it to Sammy. She tosses it back twice, then she’s done with it too.

Rabbit Pam: I wasn’t accusing any one of doing it I was just kind of making a statement. I was looking for more cheap products to use when making homemade toys. Mocha loves to shred the paper towel I use when cleaning the cage if I turn around for a few seconds he is into it! Haha

If there was an amount of bleach remaining in the paper towels and toilet paper that was harmful in any way, they wouldn’t be able to sell them… people go bonkers if things could hurt their kids So letting my buns tear into a toilet paper roll to have fun shredding the tissue doesn’t worry me at all.

It’s a different kind of bleach…. So it might be ok idk

You can also buy “green” TP which is unbleached and made from recycled paper .. it is brown.

I don’t think it’s a huge concern. How much toilet paper and paper towels are you going to allow them to eat anyway. The truth is there is so much stuff that is probably not recommended to use due to all the chemicals in everything we use each day…you can’t be afraid of everything.

Sarita: Yeah I am pretty over the top careful with what the bunnies can have. Honestly my bunnies don’t normally swallow any of the paper towel anyways, they just like to tear it apart.
