Hi guys!

I am new to this website..and pretty exciting to have joined it!! This is a great way to share stories, thoughts and questions about our bunnies! 

So my first question to you all is regarding bedding.

I have my bunnies in a large cage. Bedding can get pretty expensive as there is lots of room to fill. I was wondering if you guys have any tips on how to reduce the cost of bedding? Do you guys fill up the whole cage, or use another type of material? Any cheap places to buy it? I also want something that reduces odor. The bedding I have right now is by arm and hammer and has odor control.

Also, what are your litter boxes filled with? I have a corner litter box in my cage that both bunnies use. It is filled with the same bedding material as the rest of the cage, is this okay?

Most of us will suggest that you not use bedding in the cage and the litter box as it confuses the buns and makes litter training harder. I'm not sure if you even need bedding. My Cinnabun has a large Xpen that serves as her home when I'm out of the house, but in order to prevent accidents or her attacking the carpet, I've laid down sheets which provide a soft place to sleep but also prevents her from ruining my carpet. When she was a very young bun I had her in a cage with bedding and eventually just got sick of it. There are other alternatives, but I stress that the bedding in the litter box shouldn't be the same as in the cage as the bun will think they can go to the potty everywhere.
My litter box is a layer of newspaper and then several handfuls of Yesterday's News, which is recycled paper and is GREAT for oder absorption. I swear by Yesterday's News.

Yes, you've got to remove the bedding from the cage. You only want litter in the litterbox. Otherwise, it's too confusing for them to know where they need to go.

I don't use litter in my bunnies cages I only do shredded news paper in the litter box with paper towels on the bottom of the litter box then fill it with the shredded paper.

I will definitely give that a shot. Right now they are in a cage, we are going to set up an x pen for them that connects to the cage and will only use bedding in the litter boxes! I'm just not sure what i should put in their cage now, should i just leave the cage floor empty? Its plastic...newspaper sounds good but my rabbits will tear through anything and everything! Also, we are in Canada i guess i have to figure out what local newspapers are safe for them to chew on! Does it get stinky though?
They both just got spayed on Wednesday, so we are waiting for them to heal and then will make the change!

I would not use bedding. Just put litter in your buns litterbox and fill it with hay you are good to go. I use Yesterdays news unscented pellets its for cats and rabbits I get it at the cat section in petco!

I change the shredded news paper daily and it doesn't stink. It is actually easy to clean up too so of they fling it like hoppy does it vacuums easily

If you live in a colder climate, definitely consider using wood stove pellets for litter. They're so cheap and work great...definitely a favorite around here (along with Carefresh and Yesterday's News). Make sure that the pellets don't contain any accelerants or other added chemicals though.
