callie loves to jump and manages to get herself onto things i didn’t think she could reach. of course i keep a close eye on her, but sometimes i turn my head for a minute and she’s getting into trouble! she’s still a hyper baby, unspayed though getting spayed in two weeks. she lives in a 4x4x4 dog pen, one level. i was thinking of getting her a two level cat tree, maybe one with a covered hut type thing on top, so that she’d be sort of contained. i’m not sure if it’s a safe option, though i figure it’s safer than finding her try to jump her way onto my dresser! she does have a ramp, custom built by a friend’s husband, leading up to my bed so she can snuggle in the blankets and sit in the sun. that’s the only “higher” space she has. if a cat tree is a bad idea, any other suggestions?

I don’t think a cat tree is a good idea for a bunny. They are more built to jump laterally rather than up to down, and I also foresee the cat tree falling over when Bun jumps off. If she loves to jump, I wouldn’t get her a launch pad(any level in the pen!) or she will likely escape Depending on her size, have you looked into the mini haven in the BB store? I had one of those for ages.

A small one (two levels like you said) is possible, but I think there are better alternatives for a rabbit. The main issue is that rabbits will routinely chew or pull up carpet fibers, or mark soft places like pet beds or hidey houses with soft surfaces. A carpeted cat tree or hut can’t really be taken apart to clean.

My husband made a shelf for the xpen to provide vertical space, I call it my “sideways E”. I cover it with a blanket so it’s soft to jump up on, but the blanket can either be vacuumed off or thrown in the wash. There’s a thread about it somewhere here, let me try to find it.

I like the idea of making something yourself (or having something made) because you have control over dimensions and materials.

the mini haven is sold out. also, she loves to shred cardboard so i fear it wouldn’t last too long!!

beka, your link isn’t working. thanks, though!

i’m not the handiest person (which is why i had the ramp built!). i’ll have a look through the habitats threads and see if i find something i could have a shot at making successfully!

I bumped up the thread (“Xpen Shelf…”) and here is the link again… https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/110785/afnp/301273/Default.aspx

It’s a good idea even if you do decide to get a cat tree also.

The easiest and cheapest thing you can do is get a clean cardboard box and cut a hole in it with a serrated knife (or a steak knife). If your bun chews it up it didn’t cost you much (if anything) and is easy to replace. Your bun will appreciate the privacy and you will appreciate the cost.

If you want it to be 2-story it is easy enough to stack them, just make sure you secure them with hot glue or a good packaging tape in between (do not use duct tape as it does not adhere well to cardboard and it will not be sturdy). Just be sure any tape or glue is inbetween the two layers and does not wrap around the outside as it would be accessible to your bun for chewing.

i do have a cardboard box for her to hang out in/on. i was afraid to add a second level because i feared it wouldn’t be sturdy enough.  granted, she only weighs three pounds!
