so, i am getting a flemish giant. of course cages are not going to fit his size so the only time he would be in a cage is while im at school, or untill he is neutered/ potty trained and i can bunny proof my room. so untill then i am stuck between these two cages.

of course i would want to get the largest i could because i will always want to leave the door opened while bunny is playing so he can have a “safe” place to go if he feels he needs one.

I would go with the second one. The first one can be chewed through.

so the first one would be a good size also?

Since you’re getting a Flemmie I would go with the largest you can afford, and the second seems to be the better of the two. You want to make sure they have enough room to stretch out their legs (even with all their toys/ect) and be able to hop a few time while confined.

Flemies need lots of room, to play and run and jump. Lol and flop. Just keep in mind how big your flemie is going to get. Blue my flemmie is now almost 10 months old and weights 16lbs and when he lays down and stretches out he is about 4 feet long, so you might want to concider building your own Nic cage. And if you have any fkemie questions there are a few of us on here that have some so dont be afraid to ask. Wekcome to BB!

I agree with getting a metal doggy exercise pen…with his size, I’d probably get one with a height of 40″, or at LEAST 36″. It may seem like a lot, but those back legs sure can jump! If price is an issue, you can usually find used exercise pens for a discount, or perhaps you could even get more than one to make a bigger enclosure.

Don’t do a plastic pen. It can be chewed and the pieces might be ingested.

Any metal dog exercise pen will likely have the same dimensions (4×4 feet when configured in a square: 8 panels, 24 inches each). I think you should be able to find a quality xpen for a lot cheaper than the second link you posted. $150 for a 42 inch pen is very pricey! Check out Amazon and ebay too.  I do agree that you want a walk-through pen with an accessible door!

What is the area of the exercise space he will have?  You mentioned bunny-proofing your room.  Are there a few rooms (preferably a floor) he can have access to?  A bedroom isn’t likely to be large enough.

I agree with beka, Big Blue gets to run my livingroom and he is never satified and is always trying to get beyond where he is allowed. And also on the pen, no plastic the love to chew!!!! I jusr built Blue a larger cage and he has already torn up the carpet I put in it, but only the bottom floor, wierd huh. He just loves mischief and if you tell him no or stay away from something, suddenly that becomes the ONLY thing in his mind to test your patience lol.

I’ll put in my 2 cents. My Flemmie Roscoe is almost 6 months old and is 10 pounds already. And we have found that he can jump clean over a 36-inch high gate. He hasn’t tried to go over the 40 inch one I got, but I’m sure that’ll be the next thing he tries.

You might check Craigslist or Ebay, looking for an “extra-large wire dog crate.” That is what I initially got for Roscoe’s home – much cheaper! I think I got mine used from someone for like $50. It’s big enough for a young Flemmie to start out.

Otherwise, not sure where you are, but here in the US, I got 2 boxes of Stor wire cubes for like $18 each and a tub of zip ties for $4 – which is more than enough to build yourself a nice big NIC cage that can be reconfigured as he gets older. I put up a post not long ago that Kmart had Stor wire storage crates for $21 and Aldi had them on sale for $17. The ones Kmart has is 6 cubes for $20, which is better than only 4 cubes for the same price at Walmart. You can see them here: http://www.kmart.com/stor-floor-standing-6-cube-storage-unit/p-010W435219990001P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1

Hope that helps! Can’t wait to see pics of your Flemmie!

OMG, that is so TRUE. There is this little area where I have a short one-NIC panel fence around my antique sewing machine. The machine hangs down low enough that one NIC panel is enough to protect it – but there is one little area about the size of a single panel that Roscoe can jump into. He jumps in there and just sits and waits for me to notice – and I then squirt him – and he comes sailing outta there in one 3-ft long leap and then does binkys all over the living room.

It’s so obvious he thinks the whole thing is hilarious, because 20 mins later he does the same thing all over again.

Sorry, didn’t mean to jack the thread…..

thank you everyone for replying! so, yes that is extreamly pricey so everyone that says check craigslist and amazon you guys are absolutely right that is exactly what im doing! and as for the space issue, i have a big dog and a cat who are both terrified of my sisters guinie pigs but it took them a while to get that way. at first they obviously tried to attack them, so the reason why i say my room at first is just so i can slow introduce him to the other animals. once everything is settled down i will let him have the run of the house, much like a house cat.. my only concern is that we have a doggy door that leads out to a very big back yard that is fenced in, but i wouldn’t feel safe with Douglass going outside if i wasn’t there…. but also with the NIC cages, i was going to build that because we happen to have a ton in our attic, like boxes and boxes of them, but i don’t know. i feel even with the zip ties it would still be knocked down.

Everyone always feels like the NIC cubes aren’t that sturdy, but they actually ARE! Bullrider, can you show the NIC cage you built for Blue?If you’re worried about support for the NIC condos, dowel rods are amazing and will help!

Oh no – you can shore them up with all kinds of things – wooden dowels (in craft section at Walmart for like 38 cents a piece) and add several different levels with shelves and ramps and things. If you already have boxes of them in the attic, all you need are some zip ties and some dowels and you are good to go! You could totally save all kinds of money!

Send a PM to Bullrider – he has done a lot of NIC cages for his bun brood – and is very familiar with how sturdy it must be for a Flemmie!

I am lucky enough to have a spare bedroom for Roscoe – so he has his crate in there and has the run of the room as his “cage” when we aren’t home. Then we let him out when we are home to have the run of the house. My only regret so far is that I don’t have a fenced in yard, so he doesn’t get much outdoor time. Hope to change that next spring….

so it is okay once he is free range to let him go outside?

Outside is more tricky. There are lots of things that are dangers outside that aren’t inside. If you use pesticides on your lawn, he will ingest those and that can lead to health issues. There are also animals that will want to hurt him (birds of prey, dogs, cats, ect). BB recommends that if you do take your bun outside, because it is fun and they do really enjoy it, they need constant supervision. Also, make sure you give them some toys outside, a shady place to get out of the sun (buns do not do well in heat!) and water.

I will post a picture of Blue’s cage for you tthus evening. As for the free roam, I would be werry, cause an unsupervised bun is like an unsupervised baby! Plus there are so many dangers that we normally dont think of. I would only allow supervised playtime outside.

Here is Blue and Baby’s Nic Cage. Blue weighs 16 lbs and it holds his weight fine. I used wooden dowels to support the third shelf and the second also. for the shelves I used 1/2″ thick Plywood on top of Nic Cube panel floors and then drilled holes and zip tied them to the nic panels underneath. here is a picture of it.

everyone is so nice on here! My back yard does not have pesticides, i was thinking superivising outside would be a must because im sure i will also be paranoid.
