Why did they euthanize all of them?

I do not necessarily think this person should be "shot." Animal hoarding is a mental disease and usually comes from a traumatic event that happened in a persons life. I think it is horrible when people hoard animals but like I said, it is a mental disease.

I don't get why they euthanized all of them either?

I don't think she should be shot either, but it really seems like she's been let off of the hook. I don't think mental disease should exclude people from the consequences of their actions. Five hundred rabbits were euthanized here. Who knows how many had more painful and traumatic deaths. An $8500 fine and a restriction to one animal is a slap on the wrist.

I agree that she should not be shot. It is disgusting and sad that rabbits had to suffer at the hands of her mental illness, but the woman needs help. As someone who has suffered from a mental illness a few years ago, there needs to be more done with helping people that have issues like this. She did get off too easy, compared to how much money it cost of euthanize those rabbits. A lot of people get off certainly too easy for crimes against animals and it makes me sad

Hoarding is an illness, a symptom of obsessive compulsive disorder, and the people who do it need help. Without psychiatric help, the chances of recurring are extremely high. I don't think treating these people as criminals is the way to go - they need to be treated as severely ill psych patients.

I also don't understand why all of the rabbits had to be euthanized. Very sad.

I edited your thread title. I personally found it very harsh and abrasive, especially in a time like this with mass school shootings, and most recently the massacre in a Colorado movie theater. I'd recommend you be mindful of what you say in regards to condoning violence, both on the internet and in real life.

It's true that people who hoard animals, more often than not, have a mental illness and they are sincerely trying to help the animals, but are in over their heads... or don't have the means to properly care for the animals in their possession.

From other reports, the conditions they were in was very bad and infection rife. You can imagine.

Also, 500 is not really the total number. There were a lot of rabbits removed at other times. Hopefully early enough that something could be done for them.
What I find disappointing was there was a known problem yet intervention really came too late for those animals. I suspect animal control hand their hands tied with local law. And it would not have taken long for reduced numbers of animals to grow again.

Frustrating and sad.
Whoever says "It's only a rabbit" has obviously never loved a rabbit.
