yea were renting… my hubby and i moved here.. we rented the place “sight un-seen” we moved from a different province without being able to actually physically see the suite. the place is a disaster and a complete hazzard. we were emailed pictures and said ok.. come to find out  the pictures werent even from this suite. but were already locked in to a year lease. SO we’re trapped.. and ive tried to find a whole bunch of different ways to break the lease but nothing is working. so we’re stuck until next june!

Wow! In the US you have to meet certain criteria, you should see if thats the same where you are. As for now, I have no idea Ice, fans if you can (although not directly aimed at Yeti)

Can you board up the heating vents too? foil, Cardboard, newspaper, lots of duct tape?

I would just try to load Yetti up with frozen water bottles and keep a stand up fan (if you have one) blowing on him and his cage. Have you tried talking to the people up stairs and telling them that you guys are sweating? That’s really inconsiderate. I hope you guys and Yetti are okay.

hey guys.. i just got home from work and they have turned down the heat.. the windows being open and the fan blowing kept out little man cool. seems he loved up his frozen waterbottle quite a bit but he’s a-ok. nomming his supper. i closed all our vents so not as much air can get out. i would talk to the people upstairs but they dont speak english. their daughter translated while they were viewing the place and she didnt move in with them. we’ve been having problems with our mail too! they keep trying to RTS it when ive written down our names and given it to them and everything. (we share a mailbox) i really hope this doesnt happen again.. but if it does im going to be well prepared with his water bottles.

Not having separate heating and mailboxes may actually be illegal.. the shared heating is a fire hazard for one. So the place you are living in could be an illegal suite. I’d actually call the housing authority to check and see if they have a permit for a second dwelling there. That could get you out of the lease.

I’m in the same situation as B&Y, housing wise. Except I’m on top, with the controls (and I must say I’m a lot more respectful than your people ). Our place is a duplex with half the basement a seperate suite. Its rented out by a real estate company, and is a legal suite.

In Canada at least, tennants have more rights than the owner, so I think you should look them up and start taking action. About the lease, I’ve talked to a friend, within the realtor/property value world, and she said that most rental leases have no legal binding. As long as you give 1 months notice, you can leave within your year. I had her take a look at mine, because I had concerns and she said that even though I locked in for a year, all it was preventing was: owner can’t raise the rent within that time, and to say that the owner doesn’t need to replace our appliances if they break due to misuse.
