I made a salad tonight, well… two and usually when I walk in the room my lop is all over me trying to get at food I have in my hands or just get my attention but he sat in the corner and didn’t even look at me. I walked up to him and gave him his salad and then went to give my other rabbit her salad. When I turned around and saw he hadn’t even sniffed at it, I got a little worried. So of course I took all the different peices out of the salad and offered them to him by hand and he would offer as little as a tiny sniff and to some all he’d do was turn his head. I gave him fresh water and offered him three of his favorite treats only one of which he would take. He won’t even take carrots which are his favorite thing!

So I gave him the one treat he would eat and then it dawned on me, did he miss Fobey? I separated them a few days ago because they were fighting. So I put him in the cage with Fobey, his old cage mate and sat next to them to stop any fights if they occured. She sniffed him and went right back to eating. I offered food to Toby out of Fobey’s salad and he refused and went and sat in the corner. Not wanting to leave the two together, unsupervised, I removed Toby from Fobey’s cage and brought him upstairs with me. I gave him 30 mLs of water. Water can never be bad… right? So if he hasn’t been drinking, hopefully that will help and if he has gas in his tummy I assume that would help a little bit. I’ll keep offering him different food and giving him treats if all else fails, but should I bring him to the vet? Is this normal every now and then? It’s never happend with either him or Fobey before, but my last rabbit Ella, a week before she died, this happened to her and slowly she stopped taking treats and then the day we were going to take her to the vet she died. Toby is five. But I thought he could live longer or am I just over reacting? I don’t know, I’ll give him another 10-20 mLs of water before I go to bed and some more in the morning and I’ll keep offering him food. I think I have some criticle care on hand too, but I mean, what else would a vet tell me to do?

            Thanks.

I would take him in to the vet. If they stop eating, it can be a death sentence if not immediately taken care of. Take him in as soon as the vet opens. 5 years old is NOT an old bunny, they can live twice that or longer

I agree. Sudden uninterest in food is often the fist symptom of GI upset or stasis which can be extremely serious if not treated asap. Please call your vet. She can give him pain meds, fluids and possibly motility drugs. I’ve had rabbits die from this. If caught early, there is a very good chance of recovery.

Thank you. I have to see family today but I’ll see about getting him in. When my old rabbit passed, I’d let her out that night (The room was bunny proofed) But who knows if someone forgot something on the ground or whatever. I’m almost worring that maybe Toby ate something bad for him. I’m so scared for him right now. He’s not interested in treats any more. I’m still getting him water and I’m going to try to get some critical care today.

I’m so worried about my little boy. The vet isn’t open until tomorrow. I don’t know what to do. I just offered him his favorite treat, nothing. He won’t eat his food or drink his water. I looked over because I heard him moving and he was sitting in his litter box. I walked over and he looked like he was straining. Then he left the litter box and I don’t know what he did… I mean if its poo or pee. It’s pale yellow and really slimy. I’m so worried about him. What should I do?

Do you have any Critical Care? You can try syringe feeding him that. If not, I have heard of some of the members taking pellets and adding water to them and puree pumpkin to syringe feed them. You want to be able to get them to eat something.

If you Critical Care, I would give that to him right away. And monitor him extensively. I agree with Skipper: if don’t have CC, mushy pellets can be given to at least get food in him. Also, syringe water into the bun to keep the gut moist. ((VIBES)) Keep us updated.

Is there no emergency vet you can take him to?

You can try Simethicone. If he’s having gas pain that may offer him some relief. You can get Simethicone at any drug store. It’s medicine for babies with colic. I use the brand “Ovol”. The dose is 1 cc every hour for 3 doses and then every few hours after that.

no there is no emergency vet. I could not get my hands on any critical care as all the stores were closed today. I tried to mush up some of his food but it didn’t work. So my mom got me some pedialyte. I force fed him about 8 mLs of that this morning and 8 more tonight as well as as much water as he would take. He was drinking the water out of the syring, I wasn’t forcing him, but he didn’t seem to want to drink it from the bowl. Tonight I offered him a treat and he finally took it! I gave him another in his food bowl and he ate a few bites of pellets searching for it. He also had several poos on the ground for me. It’s funny that normally I’d be mad at him for not using the litter box, but I’m just a bit relieved to see his system is still working. I know if I take him to the vet they’ll tell me they can only find out what’s wrong with him with an x ray or blood test and I could afford that if I wipped out my whole bank savings, but after that they’d just give him pain medication and tell me to force feed him and I’m already doing that. I think that if he isn’t a bit better in a few days I’ll bring him in.

At the risk of upsetting you, but I really want to strongly argue against your plan to wait. If your bunny has stopped eating and their poops are drastically low, it really is time for the vet. Especially if they have stopped eating. I really do urge you to go to a vet ASAP. Some vets have budgets plans so you can pay in installments. Vets tend to be very understanding about money, they love animals as much as we do. What did your buns poos look like, the ones he left on the ground? His system “may still be working” like you said, but its obviously at a dangerously low rate. It sounds like your bun has either a very bad case of gas, or more likely, is developing stasis. Again, I urge you to take him to the vet.

I love my bunny very much and I’m so so worried about him but at the same time, I’ve been throught this before. All his symtoms say GI Statis but I know when I bring him in they won’t be able to do any thing more than what I’m already doing. CinabunMom, I’ve read up a lot about GI satsis lately and I am just curious, what they’d do to treat it. I will definatly call my vet tomorrow and see what they think. Trust me I will. The poos he left were only a bit smaller than normal size… I’ll call the vet tomorrow and see about getting some critical care. I am like 90% sure this is GI Statsis, I will tell them that and see what they think and let you know. I’d take him right now but I don’t know of any emergency vets any where near where I live and my bunnies regualar vet is closed.

I know when this happened To Fobey, they gave me some pain meds, critical care and sent me home. So all in all, I spent 300 for pain meds and critical care. Of course Fobey is still with us, I just wonder if I have time to try Simethicone or if I should bring him in right away. I’m so stressed out by this I can’t even think straight… I’m sorry

I wasn’t trying to insult you, I’m sure you love your bunny very much and are super worried. As far as treatment: if they do determine that it is stasis, vets can give you a prescription motility drug along with subcutaneous fluids. They will probably also give some pain meds, like you thought, but this can be a big help as when a bunny is in a lot of pain they tend to just shut down. Pain meds can help them fight to live, if it gets to that point. The vet may also be able to give you some Critical Care, which can go along way if they aren’t eating you need to get food into them.

Almost every drug store I’ve been into has some Simethicone. I would absolutely get him started on it, just in case.

If they think it’s bacterial, they may also give you an antibiotic such as Baytril.

Ok well I’ll call the vet and get some simethicone and critical care but this morning he did eat his food and drank all his water! He had a small nibble of hay and he’s running around like normal! He doesn’t seem like he’s on deaths door any more but if my vet still thinks I should bring him in, I will.

I’m glad to hear he’s eating! Just make sure to keep a close eye on him. Is he pooping normally?

I am keeping a very close eye on him! And yes, he is pooping normally! He ate about half of his salad last night so I gave him some more pedia light but his salad, hay, pellets and water were all gone this morning, I guess he was a hungry, thirsty boy!
