So  Rupert has that tail injury that’s refusing to heal but is on the mend, and his hock is acting up (what I mean about the pouring)

Today I get home and do ‘check’ (I go in at least three times a day to check conditions, feed, fill hay, veggies, pellets, water)-Rupert is not laying in his bed-under a cardboard box in front of the window as per his usual. First hint. I throw down some fresh grass, nothing. I’m thinking now. I put down some treats, he looks but doesn’t get up. This is not Rupert. So I freak, call Dave, and put Rupert out to run around with Kahlua. If he’ll turn down a treat, he’ll never turn down a frolic. He not only doesn’t run off foot flicking at me for having the audacity to pick him up, but he lays right down, eyes half closed and is shaking.

I freaked, phoned both e clinics to see who had a vet on who could see rabbits. One out right refused (how rude not to at least advise me of the other clinic!) so I phoned the other, they said they aren’t specialists but can see him.

So we fly there-it’s 50 minutes now from home. The front desk girl thinks he’s perky and it’s true he perked up from the ride, but I assured her he was not well. Additionally while kenneling them for the ride I see he had peed on his foot so not well at all.

I have to say here-he ate apple this am and his willow treat and veggies last night so at all previous checks was good, so at least we were in early.

The vet introduced himself, said he knew almost nothing about rabbits, but listened, and did what I asked (check temp, check hydration, listen to gut and palpitate)-he said he found no blockage on palpitation but that if it was early he wouldn’t. I thought the temp was low but he didn’t, but he gave sub q and metoclopramide (and tons for me to take home)-no pain meds, he wasn’t sure if they were indicated. I told him I had loads of metacam and would give it prn if I thought it was indicated. We agreed he needs to see my vet today. He offered CC but I have about three pounds, so he comped me a syringe and figured out how much he needs if he’s not eating at all….ready? 60cc!!! Yikes.

So we’re home. He’s obviously feeling better but not great. Hoped around a bit (vet also said get him moving to help his gi, so I’m about to get Rupert doing some exercise)-he ate a treat and some willow. So I may or may not give him critical care tonight. Tomorrow I am dropping him at my vet clinic-she’s in surgery all am, but if he’s acute she’ll see him right away and if not, she’ll see him before apts. Here is hoping she’s not on holidays….Please send vibes if you made it this far through my novel!

          Oh no! {{{vibes}}} for Rupert!

Maybe the car ride helped get his tummy moving? Do you have any clue as to whats triggered this?

Well, good on that vet for being honest about his experience and listening to you. I hope you can get Rupert to your own though!.

I was wondering about his tail when read your sore hocks thread. Did they ever determine what was going on?

Stay calm for your boy, hard as that is. I know he’s in good hands at the moment with your experience and emergency kit.

I’m sad to hear Rupert is unwell.

I know how frustrating it is when you need a rabbit vet and there are none. At least he was willing to help you. I hope you can get into your vet asap today or even better, that he’s feeling much better.

Let us know how it goes.

Oh no! I hope all is better now. How scary…and frustrating not being able to have your rabbit-savvy vet. The sub-q fluids etc, though was still good for an emergency situation. Sending vibes for Rupert and hugs to you.

Thanks everyone!! He turned around so quickly I almost feel I over reacted. Almost-until you consider the mass of stinky wet poos this am. And the big mass of poos I just cleaned off his bottom.

We’re sure it was a slow down. My vet was really really happy with his attitude and spunk today (read; he probably bit someone lol) and he was eating. I am very lucky-dropped him at the vet and had professionals watching him all day for the low low price of one exam. She didn’t feel the need to xray because he was picking at food. Cautioned that though they need hay most, if they aren’t feeling well that’s the first thing they stop eating. Keep on with the motility drugs for the duration. Critical care if he slows down. His temp was up today-last night he was too cool. This am he was quite spunky and I felt silly for bringing him in, but the vet last night recommended he see a rabbit vet asap and it was good to know he was watched.

He’s quite spunky tonight, bit me twice when I was cleaning the wet poop mass off his bottom.

So the tail-we have no idea what caused it, but days of videotaping proved it’s Kahlua keeping it irritated. We’re almost cleared but by using copious amounts of bitter apple. His foot looked almost perfect after one application of prep h. But that may have been my cue he wasn’t eating enough, getting enough protein, his foot always looks good.

I think the slow down was caused by the molting. This is seriously the worst molt I’ve ever seen him go through. I can’t think of anything else or any other changes, well that and he’s likely senior or close to-I adopted him five years ago this coming January so he’s maybe becoming more fragile. Vet said his teeth are great, as they were at checkup a few months ago.

I think we caught it so early we were able to turn things around quick. I’m quite sure my vet was wondering at how well he was doing, why we were at the emergency-he’s doing so well. Not eating like the cookie monster he is, but eating and pooping now and even making it into the litter box! I honestly didn’t think he’d make the fifty or so minute drive to the emergency vet, and now he’s biting so he’s feeling more spunky, eating at hay and biting his mommy who baths and meds him.

Gosh does the smell of upset tummy/sick cecals ever get easier to handle? Yuck!

What a relief! So glad to hear he’s home and doing better!
Oh…those nasty cecals…I have a hard enough time getting a whiff of the normal ones.
So am I reading this right…? Kahlua is nibbling Rupert’s tail? O_o And you spray bitter apple on his tail to keep her from chewing it? What put the idea in her head? Is it a form of barbering?
Better to get bunny in to the vet too soon than too late. You have a keen eye with your rabbits and nevermind if the doc is making assumptions. Of course the shaking he was doing would have me in the car with him too no matter what. Do you have snugglesafes for them when they are chilled? They’re supposed to be really good for maintaining temp but not overheating bun.

Glad all is well now. And just an aside…how has Mikey been?

Yay for Rupert!!!! So glad he’s feeling better. He probably figures you hadn’t spent any money at the vets in a little while so you were due.

I’m dealing with smelly poos too. Storm’s mushy poos smell like rotten eggs. Very gag-inducing.

Mimz-I think she’s nibbling it because they lick wounds; I don’t think she could have hurt him in the first place. I figured it was her opening it because I don’t think he can reach his tail! Usually overgrooming is on face and nose, so my vet agreed likely not the case. The bitter apple seems to be doing the trick!

                                  I don’t-I must have missed this-what’s a snuggle safe?

Mikey is doing really good-he went all the way to Winnipeg this year, no sedation, traveled like a champ! He got out at rest stops, walked nice, drank, peed-such normal behaviour you’d never guess he used to be terribly afraid of cars! So we’ve beat the crazy car phobia
We did have an incident, a few weeks ago he tore out the door for a pee break, and charged down the hill growling-I peek and he’s attacking (dancing and growling and going bonkers) at a MALE MOOSE. He won’t recall and is going bezerk because everything runs from him and this isn’t. I was actually off with an injured back, but I charged down the hill (think about 1 acre long) picked him up (close enough to touch the moose) and ran back UP the hill. If there was a kid under a car, I could have lifted the car! OMG what an experience!

@ Puffy-thank you! I’m so relieved too, he’s not quite there yet, but eating and moving his bowels. He definitely thought it was his turn for car rides and money lol I’m really hoping Stormy comes along too-it’s been quite the saga for you!! *hugs*

Holy cow (or should I say ‘bull’?) Lesley…you both could’ve gotten stomped! 0_o What an ordeal and yeah…put a bungee cord on that boy so all you have to do is yank his silly butt back in the door if that happens again! Yikes!

Of course perhaps some bitter apple on this too to keep Kahlua from eating it thinking it’s a huge pancake. >_<

                                    Hoping Rupert continues to improve.

Oh nooo!!! *big hugs* That happened with my first Bun and I was really worried. I called an all night vet who referred me to another that had an exotics vet on their night staff. They were an hour away but told me what to do so I wouldn’t have to spend a fortune seeing her after hours.

Keep her moving! That’s probably why the car ride helped. If they don’t feel good and aren’t tempted by treats I know its really hard. But do your best. Try to get Rupert to munch on hay. I was told to give mine pineapple or some juice through a syringe or mixed in with the water. I gave the pineapple and within minutes Beatrix had pooped out a mountain and then starting running around the room like normal! She didn’t display any sumptoms of GI stasis either but just to be safe you may want to try it. Coincadentally, she also wasn’t eating, drinking, playing and she was also refusing treats. However she did go after the pineapple like it was going out of style!

I’d try that this evening and then just keep a close eye on Rupert until you can get to the vet in the morning. Sending get well vibes your way! And keep us updated.

LOL I know-I am so weary of getting anywhere near the Moose in the area, but I just had to go get my idiot dog lol -he’s on a leash now when we head out and if no one is around he can go off leash.

The snuggle safe looks awesome-must borrow credit card and order…

Thanks Cristina We got to two vets and things are on the mend-boy was it scary though. Rupert is such a big eater and I knew something was up immediately. I think Kahlua it would be harder to tell, she often does oddball things, and often won’t take treats-just her diva nature ! I’m glad you got through your stasis scare-and noticed it; sometimes it is hard to tell!

Oh WHEW!!! Good news. Gosh darn bunnies love to give us a scare! Continued healing vibes though just in case!

And that moose story – Wow, luckily he didn’t turn on you. A moose chased my sister down our back alley when we were kids. If the moose really wanted to, he could have hurt her, but he was just satisfied she was running away as he chased her I think (of course this was in Alaska).

We have a couple of the snuggle safes – they are great, come in handy for us in the winter as though it’s not terribly cold (no snow), it can get very chilly in the house, and if I heat up the snuggle safe, and put it under a blanket, my bunnies would go snuggle with it on chilly nights. Plus, of course, good for ANY ailing animal — so it is great to have for your other animals too.

It means so much -it’s hard to share with others, they stare at you as if you stepped out of a spaceship when you mention stasis, or even rabbits!! So lucky to have this caring community. I really appreciate your kind words of encouragement.

I’m super paranoid now, checking non-stop. Thank goodness it’s the weekend I don’t have to venture away. Picked up new hay bales (6 yeah!!) today and Rupert is really enjoying the new hay so I think he’s good. He’s still giving me the worst time with medication. I now understand all the questions on how to give bunnies medicine. Honestly-Kahua, Chuck, Noot-all took meds fantastic. Rupert is determined to kill me and make sure the meds end up on me!!! Dave is helping and it’s getting accomplished, but wow!
