Hi, my lion-head, Furball was sent to boarding & came back with ear mites, i noticed only when his ears started crusting about an inch or so. So to the vet we went & he had to have an injection once a week for 3 weeks…last week he had to go into boarding again (immediately after his 3rd jab) & his vet recommended i bring him in after a week so that she could administer some lotion/drops to ensure the mites are well & truly gone, however before we even made it to the vet, he started flinging his head around more & that got me into a frenzy. We just got back from the vet & this time, the vet gave me a bottle of Ilium ear drops to administer on him once a month – 3 drops each ear to ensure he is mite free.

I need you guys’ advice if anyone has used Ilium on thier bunnies because Ilium seems to be used on cats & dogs.

I don’t have much experience with ear mite medication, I’m sure there are other members that have. However, have you considered boarding him somewhere else? Gee I’m not sure how I’d feel about boarding my bunny somewhere where I know she would come back with a parasite!

Ya i know…but i trust that boarding coz they take very good care of him, minus the mites…i think he got it from another bunny boarder…but now i’ve found another place to board him if he has to go – my parents house! So thats taken care off.

I’m not at all sure about illium – I’m sure it will be fine if it goes in the ears though and it’s not ingested.

I would not worry about the mites – the thing with mites is it is possible he already had them or if he contracted them at the boarders, it’s because he was more vulnerable then. Mites have nothing to do with cleanliness. They are very opportunistic. I used to have a rabbit that was a mite magnet and my other rabbits were fine.

Thanks Sarita for the re-assurance…I’m already a clean freak as it is…and because of his ear mites, i scrubbed & washed everything with warm soapy water…I was quite worried i forgot to clean something…haha…
