We are in the process of getting Lola a partner.  She had her first bunny date today at HRS and it went well! She needs to improve her social skills but we did have some luck with one bun that my boyfriend and I both also really love.  We didn’t bring him home yet because there was no grooming and we want to see some affection instead of just lounging next to each other and begging each other for head licks so we are going to meet up for another bun date later.

My question is: if Lola gets a friend will she change and like us less?  She is SO attached to my boyfriend and I and she really acts like she adores us.  She loves to hang out with us and will spend most of the evening lounging with one of us watching TV.  I don’t want to lose our special connection…  but on the other hand – I feel like she would benefit from having a bun friend to lounge with.  I know it’s a selfish question but I just want an honest answer.

I don’t think your bunny will like you less if she gets a buddy. This is a common pre-bonding concern. From my experience, most bunnies prefer to be with another of their own kind and usually spend more time with their bonded bunny companion. It doesn’t mean their love for you has lessened. It’s only natural for them to want to be with another bunny. On the plus side, you will have double the love because you will have another bunny who adores you as well.

First off, don’t rule him out if you don’t see any grooming! Mine didn’t groom for at least the first week or two of sessions, but they were still a relatively easy bond.

I don’t think she will like you less, but she may be less interested in spending time with you, at least at first. My pair ignored me a lot more for the first month or two after they were fully bonded. Instead of hanging out with me, they just followed each other around. Eventually that phase passed and now Otto acts exactly the same as before. He actually interacts with me more since Hannah taught him how to jump on the couch so he’ll jump up and beg for treats. He did decide he hated pets after being bonded, but he had only started liking them a month before we got Hannah, so I don’t know for sure they’re related. He still hangs out in the living room and watches tv with us, but now he has a buddy to snuggle with.

Hannah was a single bun with a single owner for three years before I got her, so she’s used to focusing on people and getting attention. She didn’t bond with me super strongly at first because she had Otto and was only interested in him, but after her infatuation with him wore off she because very people-focused again.

Thanks so much for your responses! I really appreciate it. The bun that we really like (and she seems to not mind….which is a good sign) like to ask her bum for kisses…. so there was no grooming yet being that they both seemed kind of socially inept and need a little work. It was cute that he kept begging her to lick him though.

I just have a crazy attachment to Lola and really appreciate her company but want to be sure that getting a new bun is the best thing for everyone in the equation. We will probably be moving this time next year so I was also thinking that by having a bonded friend it would make things a lot less stressful.

              Again, thanks for your responses!
