Stairs

So my buns discovered the stairs on Monday, and I have never seen the. So exited!! They now stand at the hallway door waiting to be let out to play who can run up the stairs the fastest!, when I’m home all day which is a lot at the moment the first thing they do in the morning is head for the stairs!,! I don’t mind too much when I can sit with them, but I’m a bit nervous with them going up and down them, just wanted a bit of advise, does anyone else let their buns go up and down stairs, or should I stop them?.

I don’t see any problems with stairs. When I used to live in a house, my rabbit went up and down the stairs with no issues. I actually laughed when I saw her go down the stairs, as it looks a slinky is going down hahaha.

Haha yea mine look like that too, there so funny and they love it, just though I’d double check it was ok! Haha

Stormy (my smallest bun) loves to run up and down the stairs. It’s crazy how fast he can go. He knows he’s not allowed but when he gets the chance he flies down them. Then I find him at the bottom and tell him “Storm, No” and he zooms back up them, sometimes taking them 2 at a time. My other 2 have never attempted the stairs.

Hahah I couldn’t believe how fast mine could run up and down them, they love it, super duper zoomed were going on this morning haha it good exercise for them too

My rabbit Bobby has free roam and goes up and down my stairs at free will with no problem. Before him my rabbit Pepe did as well.

I don’t see a problem with it. Hannah loves the stairs.

I don’t let her go up them though because she loves the upstairs so much that I can’t get her to come back down again. She comes down just far enough to peek at me through the railing, then zooms back up again.

HahA I have just had that problem, even stitch who normally doesn’t go further that the kitchen door went all the way up! Twinkle seemed to think it was a game of chase up and down, I love to see them so exited about it tho, and the stairs don’t cost me anything teeheee, mine are definite climbers, what other boredom breakers have u guys got for those of you who have buns who love the stairs, I keep contemplating a big cat tree for mine

I would say it depends on the stairs and bunny. In my house the stairs are all hardwood so its kind of slippery for them. I supervised them well when they first started trying them out. Sophie caught on quickly, she went up and down so gracefully and had no problem. Eventually she got TOO brave and if she was feeling particularly hyper she would just make a massive leap from top to bottom without touching a single stair which scared the crap out of me!

My rabbit Butters however, not so graceful. She starts off going up or down OK but then its almost as if when she gets to the third last stair she gets nervous or impatient and ends up tumbling over the rest so if I see her edging towards the stairs I’ll just pick her up and bring her where she’s trying to go lol
If you have carpeted stairs, let them go for it though!

My little guy is a Stair Master…his discovery of the stairs was adorable to watch and now, he takes the bottom four in one leap and then scurries up them to the long hallway to the living room on the second floor as part of his normal zooming-route. They are all carpeted, so he has a decent grip. Amusingly, he doesn’t really jump onto anything else.

When I built his NIC rabbitat, I used his love of the stairs to my advantage, eschewing ramps to levels by making a perimeter of levels all 7 inches or so apart in height so he can just run all the way all the way up to the top as if up stairs of varying depths.

If you think about it, it is really good exercise! As long as he can do so safely. Another option would be to baby gate just the bottom 4 or 5 stairs to limit the height (but it would also limit his fun). If you don’t want him accessing the upstairs floor, maybe a baby gate at the top of the stairs?

I was going to say that it’s good exercise, too. The concern is not so much the stairs (although be sure to look down when you use them in case there’s a bunny underfoot) but what is off of them. Might want a baby gate or keep a door or two shut to prevent too much exploring in non-bunny proofed rooms. Sounds fun to me.

Haha yea there allowed in my room and the top floor but I keep the rest of the doors blocked off!! they just love them! Haha

Funny to read this. Chubs and Comet never once attempted stairs in all the time we lived in MN and they always had access. Chubs once zoomed up them super fast when I put him at the bottom (which was just a landing) but that’s it. Never saw either of them go on them other than that!

I think half the reason Thumper sits at the door to go outside is for the porch steps.. goes up and down a few times before he runs around the yard. As long as they can do it safely, it’s great fun and excercise!

My old apt had a long hallway w/ stairs at the end.  All my rabbits, except my lionhead loved to go crazy up/ down the stairs.  It was great exercise, though I agree that netherland’s look like slinkies going down.  All my lops (holland & mini) went zooming.  I thought they looked like little dustbunnies in the wind.  My beloved Chewbacca was queen of the stairs and when she died, we found her right at her post at the top of the stairs (not related to her death, just coincidence).  Our current home is single level, so none of our cats are getting stair exercise anymore, though my 20 lb, 17 yo diabetic is completely ok w/ that.

Aww this sounds so cute, I wish I had stairs now xD I think carpet stairs sound pretty safe. If you have hard stairs, and they aren’t too big on chewing, maybe find out if you can put some kind of rubber matting on each stair or something for grip?
