So recently we’ve been noticing fruit flies around our condo — we are trying our hand at some indoor gardening and one of the plants died and managed to attract a TON of fruit flies.  We’ve been spraying the plants and I just read up on some tricks on another earlier BinkyBunny post but I couldn’t figure out if the fruit flies were actually harmful to rabbits?

Just want to make sure I shouldn’t be taking my buns for a vet visit just in case or anything of the sort.

I don’t think they are harmful to rabbits. Maybe annoying.

            They aren’t harmful.

It took me awhile to get rid of fruit flies too – I did the apple cider vinegar/dishwashing liquid combo and you have to do this for quite awhile. I also put all fruits and vegetables that I normally keep out in the fridge. You have to probably do this for a couple of months to really eradicate the pests.

I did just vinegar in a very shallow bowl with one drop of dishwashing soap. It works wonders! I put the bowls in the plants. I would kill a dozen per bowl easily! Overwatering plants feeds the pests, so be careful how often you water!

Get a venus fly trap plant.

I had a pet one. I thing his name was William… Or was it Louis? Maybe Douglass…

Yeah I was going to suggest a carniverous plant.  I have several varieties besides the standard venus fly trap.  They are native to NC, so they are sold at our farmer’s market, but you can buy them on-line.  I LOVE them!  Brought one to my dad in Chgo.

I’m totally addicted to Pinterest. And I found this: http://www.passionatehomemaking.com/2009/07/frugal-natural-pest-control-fruit-flies-ants-be-gone.html

I have yet to try it out. But I hope to. I agree that getting a Venus flytrap will help. =] Not to mention it’s pretty hard to kill one. ;P Maybe check out your local Home Depot for one? That’s where they sell the plants near me. =p

Thanks for all the advice guys! It’s really helpful — we’re definitely going to try some of these techniques!

Have you tried using a self watering system for the planter? That might help with fruit flies. You can buy some planters from Home Depot or Lowes I believe. Or they may have conversion kits. I know for sure they sell them at gardeners.com

We actually JUST bought the AeroGardens? (not sure if anyone has ever heard of them).. but we’re hoping that helps since there’s no soil and it basically does everything itself — you just have to add water when it needs it.

I have 2 aerogardens, one I got at the thrift store & the other was a grad gift.  Definitely no bug issues, but I usually never got awesome growth w/ my herbs.  My goal was to get a really nice herb garden started for the buns, but it just seemed to fizzle out.  Good luck!

Thanks! Our windowsill herbs have been doing really well — so hopefully we’ll have the same luck with those! Hopefully..

My boyfriend’s dad had one. He got massive growth in his herbs. So much that he had a hard time keeping up with it all. Hopes it works for you. =]
