I have recently bought the BB liiter box and screen and i was wondering what type of litter is best for buns. I know that cat litter can be dusty and paper alone doesnt absorb well enough. Any ideas? (The only pet store we have near is PetSmart. [MOD EDIT] so thats a little expensive.) Thanks so much in advance!

I go to tractor and Farm supply and buy equine pellets they are only $6 for a huge bag and really help with any amonnia smell from urine.

What type of pellets? I live on a horse farm and ride so we have plenty of equine supplies.

I use wood pellets, natural pine bedding. what ever you do dont use cedar at all, it can cause Liver deseases in rabbits.

I edited your post. Minors are not permitted to post their age on the forum.

                From the forum rules:

                REQUIREMENTS:
You must be at least 13 years of age to become a member.
You must be 18 or older to post any photos of yourself. (posting photos of your rabbits, is of course, okay!)
Members under 18 cannot use their first and last name in their DISPLAY name, and cannot post their age.

As far as your question, wood stove pellets (without accelerant) or horse stall bedding is going to be your cheapest and most absorbent option for litter. I spend about $40-50 for a year’s worth of litter.

Correct me if I am wrong but I have ALWAYS hear pine SHAVINGS as well as cedar were harmful to small animals as they give off harmful chemicals.

I would stick with wood stove pellets.

I just bought a big bag of unscented yesterdays news in the cat section of the pet store but I am sure it will be cheaper to get the equine version of wood stove pellets. You can also use care fresh that you can buy at pet stores but that gets pricey.

they are not shavings, they are compressed wood pellets for animals with rear gut digestive systems made from Feline pine. My vet reccomended the litter for me. and you are right that shavings are bad for rabbits as they emmit gases that cause liver damage when breathed by the bunny. I would not reccomend using that at all. here is a link to the house rabbit society’s page you can find lots of information there. I hope that this is helpful for you. I know using some litters are expensive, but owning a rabbit is not cheap and as their owners it is our responsibility to give them all they need to live a happy safe life.

Pelleted pine is fine. Shaved pine is what you need to avoid. They are processed differently.

I personally use CareFresh from PetSmart and LOVE it — you can get a big bag for around $20 but if you buy 3 bags at a time in bulk you get them for $15 a piece. It’s very absorbent and seems to soak up the urine smell really well for us!

I use yesterdays new no scent pelleted litter. I get it at petco it is reasonably priced. 30# bag for $15.99 it last me 6 weeks. I really wouldn’t use anything else. I have tried alot of litters over the eyars.
