        Hi peoples!

This may be a bit random, but what veggies do your buns go nuts for?

I’m not talking treats here just the general everyday diet veg. My rabbit Huey has the proper pellets and limitless hay everyday and so far has had celery, apples, carrots, green bell pepper and cabbage stalks and raisins for treats (i would rather get him into the habit of having “healthy treats” and he does really LOVE raisins)

I have checked the “safe veg” list on the other part of this site, so i understand what he can and can’t have but i would like to know what other buns (and their human counterparts) prefer.

        thanks guys!

My bun LOVES cilantro. She gets it everyday and always go for it first no matter what else might be in her bowl. Her other favorites are dandelion greens, red leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, and parsley. She doesn’t like basil, kale, or green peppers. As far as fruit goes: she really likes apples, pears, and small bites of banana.

Kale is the biggest hit in my house.

And Snowbird, is your bun getting any leafy greens everyday?  That’s going to be the most important veggie because it most closely mimics a natural diet, provides hydration, and keeps everything moving.

Romaine, red leaf, green leaf, endive, escarole… pretty much any dark green leafy lettuce is safe and should be the cornerstone of the fresh diet.  Celery, carrots, peppers, etc don’t provide the same nutrition, and fruits like apples are just a treat and should be fed sparingly.

My bun has been introduced to a very limited amount of veggies. But of what she has been introduced to she loves, loves, loves cilantro and dill. She also likes mint but she’s more likely to dig around her veggie bowl for the cilantro to eat it first. ;p If you can get your hands on carrot tops those are also a favorite. However, I noticed that the grocery store I frequent has taken to cutting the tops off of the carrots. >.<

Thanks guys, really helpful and interesting to see the different bunny preferences!

Beka27, thank you!! i had been told that he shouldnt have lettuce as it will “go straight through” (to put it politely!) and make him unwell, so have pretty much avoided it, but will definately give it a go and see how he gets on, I have some romaine in the fridge for my lunch, so i will def be sharing that!. it can be really hard to tell sometimes as you can get so many conflicting bits of information. As for fruit bits they are def little and often, and sometimes as bribery and corruption!

Haha… I know all about bribery. Has he had any bits of banana yet? My two go crazy for banana!

Iceberg lettuce is the one you need to watch out for. Dark green leafy veggies are just fine. You can start with a couple leaves and work your way up. My two eat 2-3 heads of lettuce a day, it’s a pile that’s the size of them.

not tried bananas yet…though it is on the list!

i was quite suprised when i read through the list to see some of the more unusual fruit on the safe list (mango, papaya etc) i know theyre high in natural sugar so fed sparingly, but just suprised to find out that theyre fine for buns to eat!

Skipper’s mama, even with the spelling correction, thats still a new one on me!! i wonder what it is and if we have it in the UK???

I know most of the American/UK names for stuff i.e. Cilantro/corriander etc. Curios now!!

Hunnys loves her Brussel Sprouts, Dandelion Grns & Kale. Parsley & Romaine are a couple of her everyday faves. And I just introduced her to Basil & that was a huge hit too! She’ll gobble up Collared Grns if I give them to her every couple days otherwise she gets sick of their bitterness quick… Ooh & Broccoli stems are a big pleaser too! Grn peppers & Bok Choy give her an upset belly…

Today Ashes stole a Dandelion Grn from Hunny’s bowl & gobbled it right up… She/he’s only 7 weeks – Hopefully the baby will be ok!!

I think all 3 of my buns’ favorite would have to be dandelion greens. They gobble them up so fast.
