I’ll be adopting a bun at some point and I know they want to neuter them right then and there as it’s part of the fee.

Coming into a new home is hard enough for a bun, but to have neutering on top of it? Is that going to make him resent the house or me or anything like that? Also, how long does it take to neuter and recover enough to bring him home? When I do adopt, the place is an hour away. I’m unsure if I should pay in advance a week early and then go and pick him up a week later so he’s fully healed or not.  Or if I just go that day, pay, he gets neutered and I take him home right after.

How does this work? I’m very confused and don’t want to flip bun out more than he already will be. I wish they had the option of ‘bring him home, let him acclimate and then my vet will snip him later later’ but they don’t. They do it right there upon paying the 30 dollar fee.

It will be fine. Just make sure your bun has a nice clean calm area to come home to, and all will be good. He/she will be all drowsy for the car trip home anyway, so won’t make much of a difference to them.

Okay, thank you. I was thinking he was going to be all terrorized, in pain, not knowing where he was, etc. <3

I agree with Monkeybun I think it will be okay. I would try your best to make it a safe/calm environment. $30 is a great deal for a neuter! As for how long the neuter will take, when I had Wilbur spayed I dropped her off in the morning and I was able to bring her home in the late afternoon. It depends on how long they feel your bunny will need to be watched afterwards, the actual surgery is pretty quick if I remember correctly.

It’s a great idea to have the neuter done now. He will not be traumatized at all, so that’s nothing to worry about. Make sure that if you decide to take him home that afternoon that they give you a dose of painkiller, usually Metacam, to take with you so if he shows any discomfort you can give him a dose.

What I would recommend if you are taking him home that day and an hour away, is that you find a rabbit savvy vet in your local area to possibly examine him the next day, or to be available that night if you have any problems arise. You can bring him in to a general office check up and post op visit the next day or in a few, just to have a vet check that the site is healing well and all is fine. You will want to establish him with a vet anyway once he’s home, with or without a neuter, so this may be an easy way to do that. You can find one by checking the top posts at the beginning of the Forum section with the thumbtacks, or look in your yellow pages under Exotics vets. They specialize in rabbits.

Getting it done there now will save you hundreds of dollars. He will take a week or more to adjust to his new home anyway, will be comfortable in the habitat you provide as he heals, and will probably bond well with you in the first few days as he feels better and you give him food and love. It’s all good.

Sound advice and thank you so much. I have a rabbit vet right down the road from me which I’d taken Bean to a few times for his 6 month checkups.

Question: I have my eye on this little love, but to me, he looks young despite them saying he’s about a year and a large adult rabbit. His ears seem those of a youth, and his size just doesn’t scream ‘large bun’ to me. What do you all think? His name is River and he’s a tortoiseshell.

He is adorable, and looks like a medium sized bun.

I would ask the rescue about letting you bring a blanket in for him (maybe the day before surgery) and keeping it with him afterwards at your house. It would smell familiar to him and might help him settle down in the new place.

I think he’ll be fine — it’s not as traumatizing to him as you would think. I had a mental breakdown when my buns went in for their neuter/spay and my little boy came home bouncing around and just wanted a big dinner ASAP. It was so cute to watch. But make sure you get extra pain meds to bring home with you! My little boy was really sore and as they started wearing off he settled down and looked a little uncomfortable. But when he got his pain meds he perked back up. He was really fine the next day and was mad he couldn’t come out of his cage right away. They’ll probably tell you to check the incision so you could probably use treats to let him get close to you. My buns go NUTS for craisins so you could probably try those. Even my bun who hates people will come running to your lap for a craisin. You can hold it up and let him reach to get it and look under him at the same time with a flashlight. That process worked pretty well with both my girl (who hates to be touched and gets really nervous and skittish around humans) and my boy who hates being picked up.

My girl also bonded with us a bit during her healing process so it may even be lucky that you get him right after. Taking care of them and spoiling them when they are in a time of need is a great way to bond with your bun from my experience. When my little boy hurt his paw he did the same thing. He’s usually really hyper but he’d come up and spend half the day cuddled up to us healing. It did a lot for his trust in us! So just look at it as a good thing! And a chance to bond really well with your boy on his first day home!

They let me know he was adopted out yesterday they did say they have two Jersey Woolies available. However they have no pictures up and I’m not sure if I should go on the first when I drop my son off at the airport, look at them, and choose, then have them fix/neuter them before I return to pick my son up on the 14th. Maybe they’d hold one that long. :/ Unsure. It’s worth a shot I suppose

In your other thread, you couldn’t take your bun to the vet. Is that situation changed at all? If you don’t have a vet fund yet, I would work on that first before adopting another bunny

First and foremost, I agree with Monkeybun. Make sure everything is in place prior to thinking about adopting again.

Second, you’ve just been through a traumatic loss. It’s okay to wait. I don’t want you to pick a bun just because he/she is there. You don’t sound enthusiastic about the Jersey Woolies, so skip them. Wait until you find that bun that you are so strongly attached to and you must have come hell or high water. Don’t get a bun just to get a bun, or b/c you have rabbit supplies sitting unused at the house. It might take a few months, it might take a year, but it’s okay to wait for the perfect bun that steals your heart. In the meantime, you’ll have everything prepared and ready to go so when you find that bun, you can adopt with no hesitation.
