Hi! I’m new to the forums, and a new mom to two pretty little things named Beatrice and Ragdoll.

        My question:

Is beautyberry, specifically American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana), safe for rabbits to eat? I have two very large bushes in my yard, no ripe berries yet, but lots of foliage. I’ve seen online where people complain about wild rabbits using it as fodder, but would it be safe for domestic buns? It’s a native plant to my area (Mississippi), and, as I stated earlier, wild rabbits as well as deer and birds eat it, particularly in the fall when the berries are ripe.

Any information would be absolutely lovely. Thanks!

          Hi and Welcome.

Ive never heard of that particular plant and cant find any info on it with regards to domestic rabbits so I would play it safe and not offer it. Better safe than sorry.

I’m usually pretty handy with my Google-fu, and I wasn’t able to find anything, either, unfortunately. Which is why I came here to ask! I’m definitely not going to give it to them without a good bit of proper research first!

Thanks for the welcome and the input. <3

What pretty berries. I imagine since it’s not a common berry found in the grocery store, you aren’t going to find any information on them for domestic rabbits.

Hehe, I honestly can’t imagine you’d find it in any grocery store! Unless they sell live plants, and even then, probably not! Like I said, it’s native to this area (and the leaves make excellent mosquito repellent, much like basil), and wild rabbits will eat it. So will deer.

I have a beautyberry shrub in my yard (that I bought at the nursery). They are ornamental plants and even though wild rabbits might eat them, I don’t think they are safe for domestic rabbits.
