Well Ms. Toffee went back today for her every other month dental exam.

Her teeth are not getting any better and they are terribly uneven.  Also this time she had some puss oozing out of her gums so she definitely has some gum disease problems going on I think.

We are going to try some pen-g shots to see if this helps.  Unfortunately short of pulling all her teeth, there is not much that it seems we can do.  Luckily she still eats quite a bit – mostly junk food nowadays like pellets and the Oxbow Timothy Treats.  I know her poor mouth must hurt though.

          Oh, no.
Could she lose a few teeth and get syringe fed more nutritious food? Poor little girl.

Oh, I’m sorry to hear about Toffee’s dental issues, Sarita. It’s awful to see our bunnies go thru discomfort, and I know that teeth can be a complicated problem for rabbits. It’s great that she’s eating though- she must be feeling pretty well to eat, I would think. I know that Bun and Nelli refuse food when they are ill or hurting. Would Toffee eat canned pumpkin with Critical Care & banana mixed in? I fed that to Bun when he was sick- it was one of the things he minded the least, and very nutritious .

I hope the pen-g shots work well. Good thing you’re experienced with bunnies- I have heard they can be tricky. You and Toffee will be in my prayers!

I’m so sorry. I know this must be hard and now with an infection within the gums — can’t feel good. But at least she’s still eating and that is a good sign, but even if you get this infection under control, it seems that this is quite an ongoing struggle. How many teeth would she have to have pulled if that is even an option. I’m sorry but how old is Toffee again?

Hugs to you and healing and comfort to Toffee.

Well, the vet didn’t even give me the option of pulling the teeth – she didn’t seem to feel that was an option at all. I think the best we can do is get the infection under control. She is still at 8 pounds and I know she is definitely eating – I give her whatever she wants. I really wanted to hit it hard which is why I wanted to try the pen-g shots – we’ve done baytril forever and I think it works fine but I don’t think it’s doing enough.

Toffee is about 10 years old now. It is an ongoing struggle BB with her now – I don’t think it will ever be 100% better but whatever I can do to control it and keep her somewhat comfortable is about all I can do.

Sarita, are they able to culture the stuff coming from her gums?

Have you had xray done for her recently? Sorry, I’m out of touch.

I know what you mean about hitting it hard with the penG. I opted for the penG for Jelly but then discovered the bacteria at work was anaerobic so the penG did little. : (

Jersey, we did do an x-ray about 6 months ago and the radiologist said there were what appeared to be pockets of infection in her gums. We did do baytril at that time – it was actually pussing though like it is now. I don’t think it actually cleared up since it still appears to be a problem.

We have not done a culture and if it isn’t cleared up when I take her back, I’ll talk to the vet about doing that.

What are you using for Jelly now?

Metronidazole (Flagyl). Though it still feels like pot luck.
Unfortunately the anaerobes are not able to be specifically identified I’m told. So culture only reveal that it’s anaerobe and that’s all. no sensitivity test.

Sound frustrating Jersey. I hope it works! Sometimes it just is pot luck I guess.

Yes…a frustration you know all too well Sarita. I hope you are able to get things under control for Toffee. She sounds like a strong girl which will work in her favour.

Just a related question: Are the causes of bunny gum disease similar to humans?

LPT – I have no idea. I am thinking though that for Toffee it’s age related due to bone density loss.

Well, Ms. Toffee seems to be doing well. I’ve been doing the pen-g shots since last Friday and have 3 more doses to give her. I do notice she is munching more on her greens, so I take that as a good sign. She is going back next Friday for a follow up so I’m hoping this gum infection is cleared up with the pen-g.

Yay, my vet said her gums look pink and healthy today and no puss. She’s very pleased about that and said she was munching on her greens at the vet’s office. So happy I talked my vet into the pen-g shots – I think that was the answer (at least this time).

Let me know how it works for Jelly too – I really think pen-g injections really helpful. There may be some side effects as far as eating but it’s not so much that I have ever worried and the benefits outweigh the risks I think.

I’ve always heard positive results using PenG also. So I’m feeling hopeful again.

I understand being cautious but I think you want to hit it hard – I’m not entirely sure how effective that small amount can actually be. I think .4cc’s though is the maximum amount to give any rabbit and 7 days is the maximum.

I had to pretty much suggest the pen-g from my vet – she wanted to continue with bayril, but I really wanted to do the pen-g and she knew I was fine doing injections and agreed with me to do them.

I don’t know if you remember my rex Emmy – I always regret not doing pen-g shots with her now when she had that abscess that never healed and I ended up euthanizing her – I think it would have cleared it up.

Pen-g is also what was used on Bobby and he’s totally healed up – yes, he’s lost all of his lower left molars, but overall, he’s extremely healthy. He was unable to eat hardly at all when he was dumped off with a dental abscess.
